If you want to be at top dead center on an individual cylinder because your replacing valve springs turn the engine until both valves are closed__all the way up-on the cylinder your working on.Then the piston will be on top.If you are then using air pressure to hold valves closed while removing keepers etc.- you are in the correct position. If your trying to reinstall the distributor and trying find TDC for #1 thats another story.

One of the whistles that Eastwood sells is a big help, the engine is easy to turn over with the plugs removed, just go down the fireing order, moveing the whistle from plug hole to plug hole, and it don't take as long as you might think. I made an adapter for the 4 cylinder out of a piece of hose.
