Hi, I'm going to look at a 63 Impala SS and would like to know where to find the VIN number and how to make sure it is a real SS. The owner gave me these numbers, but I don't know where they were located. 318475289927, and 631847SL72874. Any help is greatly appreciated.

After looking at what you wrote on the numbers, something is incorrect. If the numbers are actully 31847s172874 than this is the break down of those numbers. According to the chart i was looking at there are no special serial number for an SS till 1964.
3=1963
18= v8 impala
47=2 dr sports coupe
s= st. Louis
172874=prduction sequence starting @ 100001 at all plants.
The plate that contains that info is on the door hinge post on the drivers side just below the top hinge. Good luck, Joe

The Super Sport was just an option so a regular Impala or a Super Sport V8 sport coupe would be an 1847.The option number was Z03 and included The engine turned (swirl pattern) inserts on the body side moulding and trunk inserts,spinner wheel covers,vinyl bucket seats,center console, plus the usual Super Sport emblems.

Cass,
If you believe the cowl tag (not the VIN tag) to be original to the car, just post the TRIM number. All Super Sports had bucket seats (and ONLY Super Sports had buckets). The TRIM number is unique for the bucket interior, therefore, that will tell you if it is a real Super Sport.
