Right, that is how the "NEW" is supposed to work, but that is not the case in some instances. I have found a lot of new messages that are only a few hours old, and that I have not read or opened should have the "NEW" icon don't. The "NEW" should disappear after I read the new message, which it does, but some of the messages that are new and unread by me don't have the "NEW" icon.

Another issue with the new forum: To activate the "Who's On Line Now" the link must be clicked on twice before the site will take you to the other page to view what members are posting or what members are reading various forums.

Correct, but that is not what I am talking about. You can click on the "Who's Online Now" header on the forum list page to view what those members on line are looking at......what forums, or if they are making a post or if they are logging out and etc. However, it previously only took one click on the "Who's Online Now" header to go to the next page to view that information, but, with this new format, on my browser if I click on the header once, the whole form list page just moves up a little, and with the second click on the header then I can go to the next page to view what the members that are on the site are viewing.

When I click the header it opens the full view of who's on line and the forums they are viewing with only one click.

JYD, mine works exactly like Steve D and I am also using Windows 10 and Chrome. Wonder if there is some setting somewhere?

Still think the lack of a pooping horse when JYD is typed is more significant than these other technical glitches...

bigl Yep, I agree. The pooping horse was great. Unfortunately, some cool stuff was lost when the VCCA board decided in their "wisdom" to go to a new format. As they say......"if it ain't broke, don't try to fix it".

i am adapting, there are some things nice, and others that need fixing.

I do agree need a Chevrolet Banner along the top, change it with season, events, holidays to comply :)

Notified of PM's, Granted I check here most everyday, i have to remember to CHECK for messages or look for the flashing envelope

would like the picture thing to go one more step, where you can post from links, like other sites i tour. maybe just more google friendly for posting inline. i do like the attachment option, but usually link from my google photos.

as for NEW Chats/ Topics, i know if you look on the main chat page, the black items are New/ Updated, grey has not updated since last visit. same as topics BOLD vs standard text, blue

NEW icon, thought it stayed until you clicked the topic, and once you looked at it it goes away. rather you read it or not, click it and done.

i know we must move forward and change, change can be good, just need a lot of maintenance and service up front to fix the kinks and bugs in the system to get it functional and working

mad Any possibility of soliciting some help on this subject? Why put up with something we don't like when we could get it changed to something better.

So jump on the bandwagon and let's have our suggestion at least considered and a reason it is not feasible to change the system, if it is?

Just post a reply to this entry and we will be off.

Ed, It's the same software, simply upgraded so no features were lost. Can you give me some examples of what you are missing?

Tiny,
The software didn't change, so we didn't loose any functionality that I know of. Can you give me some idea what you are looking for?

No emails to advise of a PM means I have to log in every time I take a look at the forum.
Rearrangement of thread headers does not seem logical to me.

Mike

Mike, I've finally got some technical advice on the email issue and will implement it in the coming days. Thanks for your patience.

I agree. This used to be "Chevy Chatter" and it has been since 2001. Now the site is basically non-descript. Also, I'm beginning to wonder if the PM email thing will ever get fixed.

Junkyard,
1. I emailed you without response. Happy to chat you directly if you want to discuss the changes around here.
2. "Chevy Chatter" is a label and I understand some peoples attachment too it. In my defense, this IS the VCCA Discussion forum. I want the search engines to find us easily and a proper name makes that happen.

I also agree with Bill Barker's and Steve's comments.

What ever happened to all the advertiser ads? They would help break up some of the sterile-ness of the current layout. I do really like how easy it is to post pictures. No need to use a host site.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

When i switched to the updated forum software I did a big housecleaning of list of forums. There are many that were removed or combined, and i rearranged them into what i thought were logical groups. I'm happy to rearrange them further if i can get some consensus.

Two Comments:

Animated gifs are fun, but at a cost. They clutter the main page, and slow the opening of the page significantly. They also made it virtually impossible to view the forums on a mobile device. Its worth noting that 40% of the forum traffic comes from mobile devices. I'd hate to lose a potential new member to the forum or club because they couldnt use the forum on the device of their choosing.

New Format: Actually, the format is virtually exactly the same and the forum software being used is only an upgrade from the previous forums. As to "it aint broke". Forum software isnt like an old car. It requires updating for lots of reasons. Features (like the improved ability to upload photos), but also security and compatibility with newer servers, browsers and mobile devices.

Regarding the old vs. new forum header, I suggest changing the title to Vintage Chevrolet Club "Chatter" Forums.

In addition to the verbiage in the header, there used to be a three-panel wide graphic that Bill would change at least once per month. The panels usually contained photos of members vehicles, but sometimes there was a cartoon that was season appropriate. This entire panel was a link to the 'Join the club' web page.

There also used to be a corny saying or proverb that was automatically rotated many times per day.

I know, these are little things, but they contributed to the 'feel' of the forums that gave us a warm fuzzy feeling.

One function that I just noticed is different is how you edit your vehicles in the membership database. Bill and some others put a lot of work into using pull down menus to standardize the description of vehicles, which would help in searches. Now, we have a text box that allows free flowing text to describe your vehicle. This leaves the door open for many variations of describing the same year and model.

For consistency's sake, I think the standard description pull down menus should be reinstated. Without the standard vehicle descriptions, the database will get really messed up.

In the same vein, my vehicles (as entered in the old database), show up in my profile, but do not appear in any editable field when I edit my profile.

Thanks, Dean

Peter, I respectfully disagree about the "advantage" of making the site more mobile friendly. It comes at the expense of making it less desktop friendly. If 40% of users are on mobile devices that means that 60% are not. Why punish the 60% in favor of the 40%? If someone can show that we were actually losing members because of not being "mobile friendly" I might be convinced to change my mind. I could be wrong but I doubt that the club was getting a lot of "I didn't join because of your web site" complaints. I can only speak for myself but I for one am a member who uses the site less than I did directly because of the "upgrade" and how it makes it more difficult to use.
