It would be easier to install the correct 943-J generator and cutout for your vehicle instead of converting to an incorrect two brush generator with a regulator.

I would but the decision would be easier if I KNEW the engine bracket is correct.

If you post some dimensions I am sure someone will be able to advise if it is correct. Have you tried using a different cut-out?

I did......last post on page 2:

I'm in something of a dilemma not knowing even if the mounting bracket is correct for the right generator.
The one on the engine now measures 6 7/16" ID and 7 1/16" OD but the mounting holes to the engine are a perfect match so.......

The generator that is on your car now looks like the same size as the 943-J generator, so the brackets will probably work for that generator. Also, if you convert to a later two brush generator you might have the same issue in that the engine brackets may not be correct.

That's what I'm hoping but I haven't gotten a definitive answer yet.
Converting what I have is extremely simple but NOW the problem is finding a 20 amp regulator for 6 volt negative ground....... orangeupset
Just a couple hours ago I took the generator off to double and triple check things, ALL of which check out, only to experience the same problem of over charging.
I'm getting real good at R&R the generator though....... laugh

I'm getting REAL ready to jump on this one and be done with it!

The generator on eBay is also a three brush generator that uses a cutout. The seller indicates that the generator has not been tested so for $150 and not knowing if the generator works or not, I wouldn't waste the money. Also, for a "supposedly" rebuilt generator the generator doesn't look like it is in very good shape.

You might be better off taking your existing generator to your local starter/alternator shop and have them find the problem.

The generator on ebay also has the field earth terminal on it which is meant to be connected to the charge resistor on the rear of the Master light switches to lower the charging rate with all lights off.

Thanks but the only shop left around here that actually services those things is the shop I sold.
I'd probably wind up paying more for someone else to do whatever to an incorrect generator than the one I can buy which has a 30 day return policy.
Spray paint is cheap.
I'd rather take my chances on something that was rebuilt back when people still had a clue....... wink
BUT.......I messaged the ebay seller who told me the distance between the mounting ears is 6" so........ stressed

At least what I have fits so IF I can find a B Circuit, 20 amp, negative ground regulator I'll do the conversion.
There's also a rebuilt 643-J on ebay too but it's $230!

The mounting bracket I have on my car is 6-1/8" O.D. The ears of the generator are mounted on the outside of the mounting bracket ears. Someone suggested to "hot wire " the fields by connecting a jumper wire from the BAT terminal to the Field terminal and then try adjusting the third brush (only for testing). He said possibly the cut-out only cuts in when the voltage is high . I would look for a correct generator and mounting bracket along with a new cut-out.

Oh crap........if it isn't three things it's four.
Must that extra wire be used?
Chances are I will never drive this car a night anyway.

m006840......your reply came in while I was thinking and composing this message and thanks for the bracket dimension!
I can shorten the existing bracket, no problem.
If that extra wire must be used I guess I'm stuck with a 643-J....... :(

Yes, spray paint is cheap.....but that is not the issue. Look closely at the photos of the inside of the generator....for $150 it is not a quality rebuild. I agree....putting money into your incorrect generator is not a good thing......nor is putting a lot of money into another incorrect generator on eBay either. However, there is a 943-J generator on eBay for only $22.50. Can't beat the price. It needs a rebuild but it would be cost effective since it is correct, it is complete, and is a good candidate for a rebuild.... and it may even work as is. If it does work.....then, as you said, spray paint is cheap. Also, the generator appears to have the correct cast iron pulley, which alone is worth way more than the $22.50 asking price of the 943-J generator.

By the way, the generator on eBay for $229 is a 943-J, not a 643-J. The 943-J is the correct generator for your car.

Hang in there.....you will get the issue resolved.

I couldn't find it........ curse
At this point I don't care......I just want this episode to end.
There WILL be more to come.
I have to trace the gas gauge wire between the gauge and the tank.
The gauge is showing OVER full ALL the time.
I finally disconnected the wire.
There's a dead ground somewhere....... doh

Looks like it might have sold as it was there when I posted. Can't tell about the other you looked at as the model number is not clear.

The $27.50 generator is a later model. Note the two holes for wires and the fan indicative of a ventilated generator.

Don't worry about the $22.50 generator, it's gone.

That's what I thought probably happened but ebay ALWAYS (I thought) archives completed auctions.
It must have been listed as for sale rather than an auction to just disappear.
At any rate I'm considering buying the one I mentioned.
Fix, paint and maybe make a few bucks.
