Where can I get the gasket that goes between the gas filler neck extension and the gas tank? If I can't buy one, how do I make one?

The filler neck/tank seal was the same for a Master or Standard.....but is different for a trunk model and a no-trunk model.
Fits 1935 and 1936 and I would bet it is not reproduced. Probably will have to make one out of a gas resistant material.

steele rubber products in Denver NC makes something for the gas tank neck.

the one I bought 30 years ago if I remember correctly was really tight for the 34-35 std gas tank cover panel, I could not use it.

The coupe, roadster, phaeton have the same gas tank cover. I would think they may have a new one by now listed in their catalogue.???????????????

And is not gas resistant. If it would work use gas line hose.

GENE gas line is way to thick, you would never split it and get it between the gas tank cover sheet metal and the gas tank neck. Its a really tight fit.

I have 3 1935 chev std's with metal gas tank covers, I know of what I speak .

the gas tank filler neck is big enough to place the pump neck into it, without spilling gasoline all over your paint.

I believe he is refering to the seal between the filler neck and gas tank proper, not the gas tank cover. The 1936 has a removable filler neck.

Read his post. It says gasket between the neck and the tank. No mention of the apron or body sheet metal.

I bought one for my '36 from Chevy's of the 40's a couple of years ago. If you are in a pinch you can make your own out of rubber from an inter tube. I did that once.

Are You responding to my post ???

My post on the subject is about the "rubber gasket" that fits between the "gas tank filler neck" and the "gas tank cover filler opening".

Sorry everyone. My car is a 1936 Standard FC model with the trunk. I need a gasket for the joint between the gas tank and the gas tank filler neck. Mine that I made is leaking into the trunk unless I use a long tube and a funnel. Thanks for responses. I will keep checking back for further ideas to help fix my issue.

AH SO YOUR 36 CHEV STD HAS A 2 PIECE GAS TANK FILLER NECK .

THIS WOULD HAVE A *RUBBER TUBE* THAT THE NECK FILLER GOES INTO AND THE TANK NECK FITS INTO.

WOULDN'T THIS REQUIRE 2 METAL BANDS , ONE AT EACH END, TIGHTENED TO MAKE SURE IT DOESN'T LEAK.

A PROPER SIZED RADIATOR HOSE , CUT TO LENGTH , SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM ?

MY 35 STANDARD'S THE NECK IS ALL ONE PIECE AND I DO NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM

If you use radiator hose, wouldn't the gas make it soft and eventually disintegrate? Special hose is available for use with gas.

When asking questions please be very specific as to the year and model of your car. Also provide as much detailed information as you can regarding your question because it greatly helps those that want to give you the correct answer to your question.

The car in question does not have a rubber tube or hose. It has a metal filler neck or tube that joins into the tank directly tube.. Originally there was a short filler tube coming out of the tank that is then joined to a longer tube. That joint is what tends to leak in its old age. There will be a round packing nut at the "joint" with a gas resistant rubber ring making the seal.

That is the external gromet that goes around the filler neck to body. Not a filler neck seal.

I have the same car. A paper gasket was used to put the two parts together originally. Check Napa Auto parts in your local area. They sell a sheet type material that you can cut your own out of. I have also done this and it will work. The gasket won't work unless you have a "true" fit be sure to trim all access off of the outside cut. The large nut must have no excessive gasket material blocking the threads or also the fit onto the pipe area. This will require using large wrenches to apply pressure. Use a back up wrench do not apply pressure to the pipe that goes into the gas tank or it will pop out of the gas tank. Also before joining the two filler pipes together be sure and place the rubber boot gasket onto the lower pipe. This plugs the hole in the trunk floor. Good luck.

I'm posting a picture I got from terrill when he was helping me with the trunk area of my 36 std town sedan. The top arrow points to the area that terrill mentions and is the joint between the neck from the tank, and the extension that extends out of the body. I believe this is what GeorgeB is saying is leaking. The bottom arrow is what terrill refers to as the rubber boot gasket that seals the hole in the trunk floor.

Gas will not leak out of the lower location as the 1936 Engineering states "A heavy rubber seal prevents the entrance of dirt and water To the trunk area"
The top seal joins the neck to the lower neck extension. There is states "The two necks are held together with a threaded metal coupling in which a CORK seal is provided to prevent gas leakage".

The gasket I need is between the gas tank neck on the gas tank and the gas tank filler extension which is joined by a large threaded ring. I dont know what to use to make this gasket. I tried cork, but it leaks into the trunk when I pump gas into the neck.
1936 model FC

George,
The thickness of your gasket will be critical. How did you decide what material to use. Also, look at the sealing surfaces and make sure they are smooth and straight. I would think The Filling Station would have the proper gasket.

As I said before. The seal between the tank extension and filler neck is a cork packing.
For a good picture see page 25 in the Feb. 1935 Service News....Is available on the old cars manual site.

If you are unable to find that send me your email address and I will scan it.

Just remember it is a cork packing ring. They used cork for every thing yearss ago. You could probably make a packing out of neoprene rubber or some moder material.

It was only used on 1935 and 1936 cars with cuilt-in trunks so no one wwill bother to reproduce it.

Can a modern gasoline resistant O-ring be substituted for the cork packing? How about a neoprene round doughnut type gasket? Some cork that is available is not the best quality.

In looking at the picture it would require an afully large O ring.
Looks to be about the size of an exhaust pipe to manifold packing, only square cross section.

I made my own. O'Relly Auto Parts or Nappa Auto Parts has a gasket material that is excellent. Comes in a sheet. Make a template from paper. Trace onto material and cut out. I used double thick. Works great and not all that expensive.
