Bruce, that may be the correct exhaust deflector, but shouldn't it be straight out rather than on an angle as shown? Or doesn't it matter? All the tail pipes I've seen come straight out the back.

I believe there is a story on this as to when they went to the side exit but darn if I can remember it. Guess Chev Nut will have to straighten us out on that.

The 1941-1947 tail pipes were oval and went straight back. The 1948 was round, cut at an angle and bent to the left. After 1948 all replacement tail pipes were of the 1948 type.

Does that mean to avoid point deduction all 41-47 owners should take their tailpipe off and
1. straighten last bend so it comes out straight.
2. Lay pipe on cement driveway and beat end with sledge or put end in a big vise and squeeze to make it oval in shape.

Goodness, gracious I believe I have been reading Charlie's words of wisdom too long as I'm beginning to think like him. rolllaugh

Thank you Russ for spending the time on Christmas Eve to look up the printed documentation on the tailpipe. I take back all the bad things everyone else is saying about you. (only joking)

P.S. And yes Bruce my pipe (as I imagine most other 41-47's are since that all we can get) is like yours

Two little notes.
The 1947 and previous tail pipes would last through one winter is you were lucky.
The bumper area of above the tail pipe would be red with rust.

Gene: Did the lead in the gas back then cause the early rust out or was the material just not as good? Even the mufflers back in the 50's when I worked a local gas station didn't last long.

Some due to road salt and a lot due to the corrosive exahust. Yes, the mufflers lasted two years. The lead helped to rot the exhaust system also.
In 1953 the tail pipes had an aluminized tip about 18" long welded to the end of the tail pipe and that helped. Also in the mid '50's Chevrolet began to sell aluminized mufflers for 1953's abd 1954's for replacement.

Happy Holidays to you Kevin.
PO had a new tail pipe installed that exits to the left and has a chrome extension welded on to it.
