okay so after trying to heat the ring gear to remove it from the flywheel without any luck I took it to a local machine shop who has removed old ring gears and installed new ones. after he looked at mine he says its one piece. and the teeth would have to be milled off to proper dimension to accept a new gear. I am in the process of tracking down a new ring gear. I believe i have one located. I found another local machine shop who thinks they can mill the teeth off if I can get the gear and specs to mill it to right dimensions. my question is are there any other options such as, a new flywheel with the ring gear already on or a swap to a later year that is a 2 piece unit. just trying to cover all the options my gear has 122 teeth so if anyone has a lead on fly wheel that is a 2 piece or any other solution I would appreciate any advice thanks

The flywheel ring gear should have 120 teeth,as the pinion gear on the starter motor has twelve teeth, which will give you a cranking ratio of 10:1.
If the teeth have to be machined off you original flywheel, and yo get hold of a new ring gear,it should have the diameter that the flywheel has to turned sown to marked on it.Probably marked something like:Turn to 13 3/64" dia as an example.
Picked up a new ring gear for both my '28 truck and '29 Olds and both had "turn to xxxxxx inches" stamped on them.

From the flywheels I've machined, they all had 120 teeth machined from the one casting for the flywheel, and a 12 tooth starter pinion gear. One hundred & twenty two divided by twelve won't won't give the 10:1 cranking ratio, unless the tooth pitch is different.
Just looked in my '28 Master Parts Book,and it lists the Model "G",& "490"(P/No.)333089 flywheel,as having 120 teeth,and Models Superior,Utility as having a 122 tooth flywheel,(P/No.)385291,Models,Series B,D,F,H.
Perhaps the 1924 is a one off change over between the 120 tooth 490 flywheel, and the 110 tooth flywheel of the later 4 cyl's.
