That "festure" continued through 1963 on the full sized cars and 1964 on the smaller cars.
It got kind of complicated when they cam eout with the accessory position in the early '60's.
That ended up with the switch having five positions. Once it was discontinued the cars again required two keys.
Buick had it way before Chevrolet.

When Chevrolet changed to that "improvement" in 1948 they no longer used an eletroloc cable and the ignition coil became a standard unit with only conventional wires running to it.

Vertical or middle is the only run position. Tab to drivers side no key required to turn to middle. To turn tab to passenger side, you need the key. This is the lock position.

On my car the vertical (middle) is the run position. Tab to the driver's side (left) is the lock position and the key is required to turn to the vertical (middle) run position. The tab on the passenger side (right) is also the off position but no key is required to turn the ignition switch to the vertical (middle) run position.

"I've got another question - The 'off" or 'lock' position is to the left. The "on' or 'run" position is straight up. What is the purpose for the position to the right of 'run?"

The purpose of the right side ignition position is the valet mode.

With glove box and trunk locked, and no key, the valet is only able to start and move the car, as opposed to cleaning out the contents of the glove box and trunk.

Now that I've read all the posts, I see I'm repeating what has already been stated. Sorry.
