What is the best cork gasket sealant for the side cover and the valve cover. Thanks for your responses.

Other than a spray tack I usually go dry........I always thought that was preferred but would love to see some more responses-

I respond to this only to let you know about the problems I have had with using only the gasket on my 1936 Standard. I tried to go with only the gasket used with the push rod cover and had constant leaks at multiple locations along the bottom and sides. I had tried to get the edges flat and properly tighten the panel to no avail. It was a mess until I used Permatex Ultra Grey on both sides of the gasket spread with my finger. No more leaks at all and I am elated. I am no expert but this is my experience and I only hope to save someone else the frustration I had.

Hi Earl,
I use a Permatex product called High-Tack, works great for about 5 to 10 years and then needs to be repeated.
As to the valve cover, your best solution is to glue the gasket to the head with the high-tack and then put a thick grease on the valve cover edge which will create a seal and you will not have oil coming out of the valve cover.

One of the things i noticed is that the previous owners always tightened to tight. This bent the tin cover. I had to use a hammer to straighten my side pan out and valve cover. On the valve cover...it will only (tighten) go down so far as the nuts on top will only go so far before bottoming out. Many folks put spacers (washers) under the nuts to make it work adding to the downward pressure. Mine had 4 washers stacked on! It is not the pressure down on the cork gasket that makes it work! It needs room to expand and contract in there. It is the sealant that keeps leaks from happening. Check along the bottom of the side pan tin to see if it has indentations where the bolts have been. Also see if it is straight and not wavy.
