Hello I was wondering if anyone can help me out. I have a 1934 chevy 1/2 ton truck. i bought a 207 engine with trans to put in it. The Trans is Not a Sm420 it is a Borg Warner T-83-1 (3 speed). So what i need to finish this trans is the Shifter. I can't not find it any where, everyone tells me they never heard of this trans. So i was wondering if some one might have one laying around to buy or know of a place to look? Or can tell me if i can use another shifter from another Borg Warner trans to sub it for? Please Help … Thank You..

Not sure what the T-83 and SM420 indicate but in 1935 and 1936 a limited number of Warmer transmission were installed in Chevrolet Master cars and 1/2 ton trucks. This was due to a strike at the GM factory. The Warner unit had a taller shift tower and different lever. Said WM on the case.

Hey Gene!
Where did you get that information? I would love to find that and add it to my collection.

Bruce, Look in the '36 and newer editions of the parts books. They show the difference in the transmissions.

SM420 is the 4 speed truck trans that Chevy used from about '47 into the 60's. I always assumed the SM stood for Saginaw Machine. It replaced the transmission with the small lever on the right side for reverse. There was a Warner 4 speed that was installed in some '35 and '36 trucks. It had the reverse lever on the left side for thumb use. This lever is made of aluminum instead of stamped steel like the Chevy trans. The references in the parts catalog will say "with WT". Ford trucks of this era used a 4 speed trans with the left hand aluminum thumb lever. I suspect they were supplied by Warner. I had a '35 1-1/2 ton truck with the WT and a friend has a '36 1-1/2 ton panel with the WT. I am not familiar with the T83 trans but my guess it is a Warner also. Older Jeeps use a Warner T90 3 speed, floor shift trans.
