I am sure this problem I am having isn't as bad as I am making of it and hope someone can give me some guidence. I am putting a 235 C.I. 1956 Chevy motor in my 50 Chevy Wagon which had a 216 C.I. I have read and been told this will be a direct swap and to use all the parts from the flywheel back including the bell housing(three speed stick trans). Now the problem,The ring gear on my flywheel(flywheel casting number #839754)139 tooth,9 & 1/4" clutch, is bad,I checked my parts book and this wheel is for a 1942 to 52. I ordered a new ring gear from Chevy of the 40's and it is a 139 tooth but when I lay it on my flywheel it is at least 1/4" to large in diameter. I had another flywheel from a 216 with the same part number and it was to large for that flywheel also. I had the flywheel(casting #8705410),I believe this is probably correct for the 235 but my parts book only goes to 53, from the 1956 235 C.I. motor I am putting in the car and it has 168 tooth ring gear and is for a 10" clutch but the 139 tooth ring gear will fit on it.Can any one shed any light on this problem????Could I use the flywheel from the 235 and run a larger clutch? Would this wheel match up to the crank shaft mounting holes. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

The 839754 flywheel is correct for 1942-53 cars and 1/2 ton trucks with the standard Clutch-it has 6 bolt holes for the pressure plate.
The 3705410 flywheel has many applications. It fits various engines from 1954 thru at least 1960.The differences is the number of pressure plate bolt holes and the quanity-and the number of teeth on the ring gear,The 6 volt starters use the 139 tooth ring gear and the 12 volt starters the 168 tooth. There is no reason that you cannot use the 3705410 fly wheel -with a 139 tooth ring gear -as long as your pressure plate bolts up to it.All of the flywheels will bolt up to the 235 crankshaft.Sounds as if they sent you a 235 ring gear rather than a 216.
