I have a 250 six cylinder in my original camaro and was at a national show recently and was given a point deduction because my battery is installed backwards they said. The posts are facing away from the radiator support with negative cable facing the engine. It has been that way since my wife had the car since 1977. I ordered original style cables for it a few years ago and the only way the cablers reach is the way I have the battery now. Does anyone have information on which direction the battery should be? I have looked in several catalogs and have not found any luck in that route.

I had a 1969 Impala and the battery posts and cables were set up just as you described in your post above.

When you say "national show" what show are you referring to?

Also, what does your 1969 shop manual show regarding the battery and the cables?

You might want to check with the Camaro Club and have them confirm if your battery installation is correct.

Do a search on Google for the American Camaro Association.

Then the determination has to be made if the factory battery installation for the specific vehicle, back in 1969, had the top mount battery or the side mount battery. I believe that change to side mount happened in the spring of 1969. I have seen a TSB, on that change.

I was unable to enlarge this bulletin, dated 5/31/1969.

After clicking on the link and viewing the bulletin, left click on the bulletin to enlarge.

Bulletin refers to the side mount "recently being released as standard equipment" on 1969 Camaro, Corvette and Chevy Van.

Since the bulletin was dated May 31, 1969, and the text stated the change was recently released, it would be safe to say the change occurred in May of 1969.
