I've got an AC S6 oil filter that I've got a couple of questions about. First off,it's all black, housing and lid, so I assume it's a factory install. I pulled it off a car a couple of years ago and don't remember the exact year but it was a 49-52.It's got a smooth, cone shaped lid, no indent at the rim, like the other S-6's I have, more like a Fram filter. It has Type S6 AC Oil Filter, printed on one side of the lid in white, and Use AC P115, printed on the other side in white. No label on the cannister. Were the factory filters different than the dealer accys. or is this an older model? It does have the mounting brackets and U-bolts to mount by the horn on the manifold. Does anyone know of any decals that match this printing?

Thanks, Bob

Well, I'm no expert, but I had a similar question regarding my '49 truck. I posted to four forums and only got one reply. Apparently the factory and dealer canisters were different. Here's what I've been told: There were 2 major manufacturers of the canisters, AC and Fram. If the canister was factory installed, it was an AC, and painted all black. Dealer installed was usually an AC, but it was painted yellow on the canister and black on the lid. Some AC's were painted blue on the canister and orange on the top, others were a gray body with black lid. Fram painted their canisters orange with a black top.
All AC canisters have a smooth cone bottom, while Frams' have a crimped cone bottom. Hope this helps! I know you can get decals online from Chevy Duty and elsewhere for the FRAM and AC dealer canister.

I have two off different 53 Bel Air's and the body of the filter is Blue on one and black on the other, both have Orange tops and FRAM Printed on top edge. I bought a Fram for a 1952 add on in the 50's. I think they have several different ones.
