Dale could you rack your brain to remember where you got the info about the friction jack color?

Back in the day, Marlo Moss was building a '47 convertible, and he was making it a show winner, with lots of accessories and NOS parts. He showed it in the VCCA and AACA. He has since sold it. I'm pretty sure he was the source of the info. Asked Cousin Dave about it to see if he could remember anything different. Not so far.

Good old Marlo Moss, I bought a lot from that guy. He had everything, for a price of course. When he sold his convertible he sold a lot of hard to find accessories, I bought my first hydraulic jack from him, NOS in the box.

I wonder who made those? How do they work? Is their fluid in them?

I'd sure love to see it standing up in the base!!

We will probably need to take up a collection and send to Johnny as those are priceless items.

I can't figure what moves up and down or how. A video would probably take home a Oscar.

Also, I guess that Marlo does exist and not something Dale just imagined.

The accessory book shows the jack standing, but once again the pics in the books are not always realistic.. That's why I would like to see it standing..I am quite sure Johnny would not part with either..I aways like to have a back up..doubt if I would ever have the opportunity to own one of those

I'm sure there is fluid in the pump area and I think the bottom part that is dark colored in the picture extends down on the base when the pump handle is utilized thus raising the top section with the piece that lifts on the bumper. That piece appears to be able to be located to different positions to accommodate different bumper heights.
I have one similar to the Chev one but is heavier duty looking. Was bought new from a Cadillac dealer in the 50's as the car buyer did not trust mechanical bumper jacks. It came in a metal carrying case and is not light. Still works ! Made by Narragansett Machine Co in Rhode Island. Have no idea if it is a true Cadillac accessory jack or just one the parts department got for the car buyer.

To answer a few of your questions, yes the darker rod on the bottom is where the aluminum finish shaft rises. The top is where the fluid is. in the next couple of days I will post detail pictures for all of you to see. My garage addition is just rapping up and I will be able to get organized.

I sold the second hydraulic jack about 9 years ago thinking I would only show one car at a time and only needed 1 jack. Once I had both cars done I realized I made a mistake. While at a VCCA show with my convertible (hydraulic jack in the trunk) a fellow VCCA member with a 1956 Chevy Wagon ask if the jack was original and correct for my car. I answered yes, he said he has one just like it. Well I ask if he was interested in selling it to me and now I have one for each car. I was very lucky, I have never seen any other hydraulic jacks other than the ones I have owned.

Johnny thanks for stepping forward. With your future pics and info I think all interested will be very well versed on the 46-48 original, correct jacks...Russell thanks for all your priceless research....Obviously us 46-48 guys will do what it takes to find the truth, no matter what the topic.....

Yes Bruce, we have moved the ball a good deal further down the field since the 2003 and 2007 discussions. With the upcoming pictures from Johnny we do have a good idea of what to look for in the different models of jacks. We have talked about and provided pictures AND specifications from about '38 through '54. HOWERVER, one still remains a mystery. Yep, the 1948 STANDARD jack. Not a single picture of one that meets the criteria. We know of many, thanks to Dick, that have a 100% correct for '47. But, as stated many, many (sorry Charlie) times that their is something different for the '48. WHAT WAS THE DIFFERENCE? WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR WHEN LOOKING? WAS IT THE BASE? WAS IT THE BODY? WAS IT.........?

We have pretty well confirmed for 1948:
1. The hydraulic jack, pictured in the acc. booklet. (Johnny)
2. The universal jack, pictured in the acc. booklet. (Russell)
3. The mechanical friction jack, no picture, but verified by several distinguished members. Although the color of these remains in question by some.
4. The standard jack included with the car. No confirmed (as to the spec. sheet) sighting. (Although some think it is the same as '47)

To be continued. Waiting on pictures from a couple people that believe they might have the standard jack.

I am beginning to lose faith about receiving any pictures after I tell them what to check in the way of measurements.

I guess you will leave your friction as is after Dale's recollection. One less thing to do.

I was sure I had found you a '38-'40 friction as in Dave's article but, it doesn't have the writing on the side. Oh well.

Never in my wildest imagination would I thought my simple jack question last month would have stirred up this much interest. Thanks to Bruce, Russ, Gene, Johnny and others who contributed information and pictures I, for one, certainly know much more than before.

Going back to the 1948 accessory hydraulic jack. I am sure this was made for many sorces, ie, other makes of cars and sold through after market sorces, etc., so one could crop up in any place (if you know what you are looking for).

Yep, that's kind of why this thread is still going. So we know what to look for when looking.
