Russell as mentioned here's the W stamp, different then the other jacks I have with the W............. BTW...Would I spend the money to have my jack shaft zinc or chromium plated, I sure would if it wasn't for haven't to remove it..I can see a big challenge with getting the catch re-pounded correctly. I'm sure our man Kevin "the metal guy "could pull it off though

I flattened the hump just enough to slide of the lifting mechanism off. The metal is fairly soft. I don't think it will be hard to re-dimple. I hope. Strange, no UP/DOWN marking? When did you last hear from out friend?

My opinion would be not to chrome plate the shaft unless you are going to put it on Bruce's wall for display. Wasn't chrome originally so why now. Maybe consider cadmium plating. Don't know what finish zinc gives. Russ said he had it blasted so I assume all evidence of rust is now gone. Maybe sand to get the metal smooth and shiny then clear coat it ?? Like I said, that's my opinion and Russ should do whatever he likes and fills comfortable with.

If you can't re-dimple easily maybe drill a small pilot hole & install a metal screw. The head of the screw should be enough to keep the lifting piece from coming off and most likely you would be the only one that will see the small screw.

First, the jack that I gave to Dick did have the ribs. I only have a side view of Ed's, can't tell if his has them. Yes I filled in the shaft and placed on solid surface and gently tapped it down. Will probably go with zinc like on these.

shafts I've seen that were not rusted we're not shiny Yea, who knows what my parts will look like in 60+ years. I know I lost my "shine" some years ago! Another way to mash the hump would be to fill in the shaft then squeeze in a vice. But cover any teeth if the vice has them.

Yes, I recall not too long ago a very wise man made the statement, "don't paint it, you will not be happy".

Should have kept the one you sent to me. Want me to send it back when it arrives ?? Hate to see you mark up a newly plated one when you are not sure if your procedure will work.

The shaft on that one is only 1" x 1". This one is 1 1/8" x 1 1/2". Yours should arrive today.
If it does scuff it some, I fell sure it was scuffed when it was done at the factory also. Stands to reason to me.

I don't think I have ever seen anything here on chat so researched and talked to death than the jack for 42-54. I'm sure that it is a relief for all the 47-48ers to have something interesting to talk about. What with all the boring topics that are inherent to those stinkin fleet lines. I sure am happy for you all. And, I hope you soon create a third and fourth parts to the thread. Your thread sure is interesting to the rest of us out here. Is too! Much better than watching paint dry or grass grow. Keep up the good work of your research. May you will come to a consensus about such a simple thing soon. Btu then what're you going to do. Talk about Fultons? Just shoot me. Best regards to all you 42-54 owners with the right and wrong jacks. And to the 47-48 fleet liners I think it is mighty thoughtful to include all the rest of the folks in your forum into the discussion. Reaching down to those not so far up the pecking order must be a humbling experience. Is too! Charlie

Having read and re-read your post, it became apparent that someone must be holding a gun to your head. Not to worry, the authorities are on the way. Thought while you are waiting, you might to go down to parts wanted thread and read the thrilling discussion on the tool kit bag by us same '46-'48er's. Good stuff. Is too. Now, back on subject.
