Yes, a little more jack info. Since I now have a new jack for the '48 I decided to re-do the friction jack that was in the trunk. To take it back to original. In the 2007 post it was stated by Gene as he remembered they were green. Yes, clearly seen on mine. So, after blasting, imagine my surprise to find out the body of this thing is some kind of "pot metal", not cast iron. Also found it easy to disassemble. More later.

I have seen so many of those jacks in judging. Some how many seemed to have survived. Back in the "day" I can't remember ever seeing one.The 1946 wagom at the Middle West Meet had one. Is the body aluminum?

Yes, I know. It is unbelievable how light this part is. As for the year, I do not know. Based entirely on the shape I would GUESS 46-48. I am not sure if it was ever clear if this was sold through Chevy parts dept. or not. It must be some type alloy? Maybe something dug out of "Area 51"

Cevrolet showed that jack as an accessory from 1938-1948 and they were not all exactly the same. Other GM makes also offered it.

Yes, right off. I was studying how to get the base off. Decided to put my foot on one corner and tilt to one side and on the opposing corner a quick blow with a block of wood. Popped right off.

I had no idea it was not cast iron. Fortunately the blast cabinet I have use of at NAPA has a very very fine medium. They blast piston and other engine parts. Takes longer to clean painted stuff but less damage.

Gene do you have documentation that this jack was produced for 37-48 GM vehicles?

Thats'38-'48 Pictured in 1939 booklet "Modern to the Minute" accessories Also in 1939 acessory manal #985377 Descrobed as Universal bumper jack $3.95
I can't find my two 1938 accessory books at this time.
Listed in 1948 parts book, jack, all models, Mech. bumper type,#986177, $5.95
1948 parts book also shows jack, hydraulic bumper type, #986141, $15.00 Only year Hyd. type listed
No "fancy" types listed for 1949.
Don't have time right now to dig through other GM makes.
The above numbers are numbers for accessories, not for replacement parts.

Ok guys, the nit-pickier here. #986141, $15.00 Only year Hyd. type listed The hyd. is listed in the '47 spec. sheet, same number. Not listed in the price sheet though. Lets see if I have it right, for '48: 1. There is a standard jack, from the factory, included with the car? 2. There is a hydraulic #986141 acc. jack. Shown in the '48 acc. booklet, right? 3. There is the jack listed as mechanical #986177. The so called friction jack, right??? 4. There is the OTHER acc. jack listed as UNIVERSAL # unknown, in the '48 acc. booklet, right??? Is this correct?

Come to order, school is in session. Decided to make a new "pin" that holds the jacking mechanism to the body. So I got out my trusty lathe. Yes, it's a drill and grinder. Next, bought a 4" SS 3/8 bolt. Went to work. A shot time later. Will drill the hole tomorrow. DISCLAIMER: DANGER!!! DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!!!! DANGER!!!

The Krylon is a perfect match. Rustoleum is too light/bright. I decided to NOT remove the guts, to avoid possible damage to the springs. I carried all the parts back to NAPA to touch-up in the blast cabinet. While I was there I looked around and found a bag of the blast material they use. It is glass beads by Potters. Excellent!! glass beads As I said before, they use this to clean engine parts. I then found a spray can of silver/zinc on the shelf and shot some in the slot and on the springs for protection. These will not be painted green. Enough for today, later.

Bruce, The drill and the grinder pictured above IS my lathe. Look at the drill, it has the bolt in the chuck. Do any of you have one of these jack still painted green. I want to know if the pin I just made should be painted with the body? I am thinking yes.

The drill was resting on a table held with my left hand while I held the grinder in my right. I am right handed. Not hard with some practice. But, still dangerous.
Disclaimer: I take no responsibility and do not recommend anyone try this!!
Both cans have Hunter Green on them. The Krylon is satin.
Note: I had to cut off the threaded part of the bolt as it would not center in the chuck and wobbled. Not what you want.

Thank you...I would say your bolt through the ratchet should be natural...Thoughts are that it was assembled after painted

Scroll back up to where I have the picture of the jack that shows the green. I was holding that lever down to show the green. Notice that the inner most part was still natural, as if the paint could not reach. So my thinking is it was not painted before assembly? Thoughts.
I will take a closer look at the original photo tonight. I do believe I see green on the side of the bolt.

Russell Question when painting your jack mechanism, how did you get between the lever without scratching off the paint??

Bruce, I am sorry but my brain is not working so well. I can't seem to understand what/where you are asking. Sorry! Please post or email me a picture of exactly what you're asking. The lever, where the handle sticks in??? If that is the question. I hung the mechanism with a piece of wire around one of the rivets. The one in the middle, closest to the edge. Put the up/down lever, down. Pushed the jacking lever pushed up, then painted the whole thing. Hanging from the wire I could get all sides. 24 hours later. I moved the up/down lever to up and the jacking lever pushed down and moved the hanging wire slightly and put on the second coat. Is this it?? On my friction jack, I did paint the bolt. I blew-up the pictures I took and it showed clearly green paint. Jack on a stick. Note: I did not prime anything. Just 2 or 3 coats of paint. Did not want to lose any of the fine details or flaws.
