What size tires do you run on your 1940. Are they 600-16 Bias, 600-16 Raial, 650-16 Bias, or 650-16 Radial? I'm going to buy a new set of tires and most of my use is touring.

I have 600-16 bias on my `40......they have been on since the late 70`s and still look pretty good ....no cracks between treads ...I don`t tour , so, when I get my first flat, I`ll probably get the same -Firestones.

If your tires are almost 35 years old, I would suggest that you replace them before you get your first flat. I know that my reaction time is not as good as it was 35 years ago, especially when driving my vintage Chevrolet.

I would stay with the original size 6.00X16. If you get Firestones , which I would recommend, they run a little bit oversized and would be equal to the optional for 1940 6.25X16 size. Also them seem to wear better and the white walls say white.

Yes Toolman ....I should replace them ....I worry about the idiots mounting them ....don`t trust them with new wide white walls ...but guess I will look into it this summer .

35 going 40 year old tires probably dont need air to hold the car up. I would even drive to the mailbox on them. Tony

CC, I can see the difference between the two as follows: The top one seems to have the proper rim and the curb ridge in the white. Hubcap seems to as normal. The bottom seems to have the hubcap sticking out farther from the center and/or the striping. Also, no curb ridge is shown. Please tell us the differences between the two sets. Thanks for the post. Intriguing. Charlie BTW: Very nice pictures. You been taking lessons from Mike Buller or Brewster?

Charlie, you nailed it...Top Pic, Bias ply, original wheel and cap...Bottom Pic, Radial tire, Rally wheel and modified cap ...Good eye my friend... I thought the radials would give a better ride and steering, none which is true, only advantage is,they save the ware and tear of the bias ply's...Don't waste your money on radials

Based on price and a friends' recommendation I bought a set of the General Jets (600-16) from Lucas Tire in Long Beach. I thought the grooves in the freeways would be a real problem in terms of tracking. Way less than I thought. And cornering was very decent.
