The post is square with rounded corners but the hole in the base is round.

Russ: You asked me to look for a patent number on my jack. Get your pencil ready. "PATENT APPLIED FOR" It would appear mine is an early production model. On the other side there is "W" stamped in the metal. Dick PS - Bruce should be posting a pic of my semi finished jack when he has time.

It would appear mine is an early production model. That does seem logical. It being '47 and supposedly different than '46. I only wish the one Ed has would have had the different lower height as listed above, 7 5/8. Guess we will never know if his was in his car when new.

Why don't we look at the most ovious 1st???This is from the 1948 accessory catalog...Looks like a 50's jack to me,easy to find as well...Great documentation when being judged as well?? You will see Gene's jack below..Looks the same to me??

Look closely at the picture with the ruler beside the shaft. There is a flat spring protruding out on that side. When you insert the shaft into the base that spring will snap in a grove that circles the hole at the corresponding height when the shaft bottoms out on the base. That makes the unit a little more secure and you have to physically pull the two pieces apart. The other picture of the shaft is from the jack I have in my other 47. I was able to get at it this morning. I could not remember what the jack in that car looked like. Turns out it is the same as the one we have been talking about for several weeks now. It is missing the spring. As you can see there is nothing protruding from the opening. That jack has "Patent Pending" stamped on it also. I sent Bruce a better picture showing the spring. When he posts it here you should be able to see it.

Patent # Could different jacks have the same number? If you mean different jacks of the same style/made the same with the same parts I would think they would have the same patent number. If you mean different jacks made differently I would think their patent numbers would be different. Since I am not a patent attorney, that's my thought on the subject. Dick

Russ: You get a round of applause. I assume that number was on someone's 47/48 jack ?? So it looks like the patent was applied for on Jan 22,1945 and the Dec 30, 1947 date would be the date the patent was granted(registered) ??? SO maybe the patent was for the mechanism since obviously the bumper contact point is different than the ones we are talking about. Wonder if the two jacks Bruce just mentioned had the same patent number as this ????? The drawings sure show the shape of the spring & how it goes in the stand. Dick

If the patent was granted that late when did it actually go into production??? Before or after that date. I will check on mine tomorrow.
