Gene, you said " some '53/'54's has a roller on the ratcheting part that ran on the jack post". So, is that picture one of those? Bruce, the picture in the '48 accessories book you posted, looks like a dead ringer to this. Note the corners on the base. So, question is, WHEN did this jack become the one supplied with the car. Perhaps early '48, mid '48, late '48, or '49??? Another ?. The lower lift height. In '48 it is stated at 7 5/8". '49-'54 is stated at 6". Questions??????

The picture is of the original correct jack from my 1950. I can't remember for sure as to where the location of the roller was on SOME 1952-1954 jacks.
The patent number on my 1950 jack is 2,433,537.-same as the earlier post.
The base in the ad picture above looks smaller than mine. Also mine has no bottom plate or "legs" just a single stamping. The jack in the picture is in the 1948 parts book umder the part number shown....I believe that is a 1948 jack. That number is also in the 1947 accessory list.

From 1949 Engineering; The tool equipment supplied with the 1949 models consists of an improved bumper jack and handle. The redesigned bumper jack has a larger base for greater stability, and a heavier column for increased strength. The base is now 8" square, where as it was 7" in 1948. The minimum height of the jack has been reduced from 7 5/8" to 6", to accomodate the new bumpers. The column mount is now ofset from center of the base, and the instruction tag specifies the proper position for operation of the jack. The jack handle is designed to serve also as a wheel wrench and hub cap remover. The hammer, wrenches, screw driver, pliers, and tool bag formerly supplied, are eleminated for 1949.

So Gene, To me, that seems that the '48 "supplied" jack is not the one shown above. It may have been the "accessory" jack, but not the standard. The '48 standard is going to look more like Dick's '47. Also confirmed earlier by Johnny. That Engineering Manual seems to bare this out. Reading the text, it also confirms that the lower height was indeed 7 5/8 for '48.
As to the patent #. Dick's jack had "patent applied for". Ed's believed '48 jack had 2433537 on it. Since that number was assigned or approved on December '47, that would indicate, to me at least, his jack was made after that date. That patent number carries through for many years.

Looks like a mirror image to Gene's '50. Wondering, how much space is left on you jack wall of fame?

Gene, we now know that the jack patent was issued to M. G. Ward in Dec. '47. I'm going out on a limb and speculate that he is the designer of the '46 through '54 and maybe later. Their is a "W" stamped on these jacks and that's all. Could we assume that GM and maybe others licensed the design and made the jack themselves. I can not find any more info on Mr. Ward. Thoughts.

Will the Chef have the correct 48 jack soon No doubt!! I only hope it is the "standard" jack that would have been in the car when new. At least, that's the one I want. Good hunting!

I am sure GM made no jacks. With the W stamped Ward made the jacks or another company with the W being the first letter in the name. I learned something today. There is a roller on my jack as was pointed out by the aroww a while back. Never looked that close at the jack before. That means 1949-1954 jacks are the same. My jack also has the stamped W.....by the looks the jack was used only a few times. Then I checked out the nice 1955 jack I have. Has patent pending and a stamped W.....and the rolller. I can't get at my '57's jack but hope to later in the week. You have to give this thread credit. It has stayed on subject through the many posts.

You have to give this thread credit. It has stayed on subject through the many posts That is because, for me at least, to clear up the questions that were never really answered back in 2007. Hopefully we will stay on task until the mystery of the '48 jack is cleared up. Wonder why only a "W" on the jack and not a name or company??? I learned something today Just kidding. Then I checked out the nice 1955 jack I have. Has patent pending and a stamped W..... So their must have been enough of a change after '54 to apply for a new patent.

Saginaw Division of GM made jacks but they were a different type than being discussed. They were sold through United Motors Service.

Hey Bruce, I just finished reading that earlier thread, and low-and-behold, look who was the last poster in that thread. With your persistence, we will get some answers THIS time around.

I remembered to take a look at the jack in my 48. Has the W and patent # 2,433,537, and the spring in the bottom. Looks just like the picture of the 50 jack. Just about everything is original on my 48, other than the engine has been changed twice according to the paperwork I have. Of course I changed out the wiring harness a couple of years ago.

Hi Keith, Does your jack base look like the picture above? If yes, do you see any numbers on the bottom? Like maybe 2400235??? If it looks different, how about a picture???
