I know this has been covered before...I need to know what are the correct hose clamps for a 1950 216 c.i.d. I have looked, maybe in the wrong section on here..can't find it. I need the correct lower radiator hose clamps. 1 7/8 " O.D. on hose...I have the typical worm drive right now. I know those aren't correct. The upper ones on the car might be correct. A picture would be helpful too. Thanks all you great people.

I just ordered a set of reproduction hoses and clamps from Chevs of the 40's, and it's listed on their website that that are temporarily out of the original style clamp. They sent the worm drive ones with the hoses, so I'm hoping I have some in the parts stash! I'll have to do some searching before I have a picture...

The clamps pictured in Chevs of the '40's catalog on page 43 are as correct as you can get today.

Page 43 of my catalog, 2014 edition, shows engine components, valve covers but not any hose clamps. Which catalog are you looking at? Can you give their item number for the clamps? Thanks

If the hoses are older they may be hardened and do not seal well.

I replaced the hoses, pipe and clamps at the same time. I kind of think its the smooth paint coating on the metal to rubber hose. Charlie had mentioned to use some Indian head sealant, which I did not do. I had to soap up the pipe to alien on the rubber hose...Its kind of a tricky fit as you try to line it all up

The metal under the hose should be bare-no paint. A friend on a tour had a hose that kept coming loose and the cause was the paint on the radiator outlet which was painted. When it got hot the paint softened.

When using the "original style clamps" I wrap the metal hose fittings with several turns of plastic electricians tape (not visible when the hose is installed) and have not had any leakage problems. I've been doing it for many years and have not had any leak problems. Prior to that, especially on the upper hose, the upper fitting would seep because the "original style clamp" (COF clamps)would not tighten enough before bottoming out.

Exactly what I am experiencing...Did you paint all of the metal hose, or only what is visible??

Chef
I don't remember if I painted the metal under the rubber hose or not. I think I wrapped 2 tape widths 4 wraps under where the clamps were and I've never had a leak problem. If I pull a hose for any reason I refresh the tape. So the paint is probably long gone. I suspect the leaks are caused by minor pitting in the metal and/or the COF "original style" hose clamps not being manufactured quite to GM specs.
At one time I was crimping the clamps that leaked where it was least visible. That worked too since it shortened the clamp and it was tighter. I never got any judging points taken off for the crimps but they were a bright light to me every time I opened the hood. And, I think from some of your comments, you know how that is. At least I can't see the tape.

Thanks all ! Again ! I found correct clamps at Restoration Supply. $2.50 each for lower 1 7/8 " clamps. They were out of the smaller ones for upper. Mine were fine. soon as I get radiator back from being fixed, will put all this back together correctly and carefully and get ready to hit the Cruisin scene here !!

I have seen several styles of clamps that look very similar. Can someone post a photo of what is the correct "original" style. Thanks.

Any other advise as I remove and re-install all my hoses to hopefully stop all my little leaks..The tape method sounds good but realisticly if all is done properly you would think the clamp should to the job...Is it the repro parts??"hoses and clamps?
