Your post is probably fairly typical of the way many people use their cars. Since they sit for periods of time, and normally only take short trips when they do go out, 8 amps without headlights will recharge the battery due to the drainage from sitting, and the drain from starting it.

If there was a constant 8 amps going into the battery after the battery was fully charged---(As would happen during a longer trip), the battery would almost certainly over charge and boil.
IMHO

If I did do much night driving then I would have the headlamps resilvered and vacuum sealed and the Peterson regulator added, along with LED taillight conversion and turn signals. I think at this point just getting the car to run and drive without problems would be a good starting point.

Hello akdale,
May I be allowed to ask? Between m006840's thought of the reliance of the original electrical charging system and your thought of the over charging and battery damage, isn't the difference centered on regulation of the battery's level of charge? Generator or Alternator, isn't it the regulator's job?

Yes, it is a regulators job to control the power that goes into the battery.
The alternator setup does that very well.

However, It is my understanding that the Breaker setup that is on the generator only serves to disconnect the generator from the battery when the engine is turned off.
When the engine is running, the Breaker closes and the generator charges the battery whether or not charging is needed.
Adjusting the third brush manually fine tunes the amperage output of the generator. This type of charging system can never be totally balanced for correctly maintaining a correct charge on the battery.
In My Opinion...

Had a similar problem that after months of rebuilt carb, new fuel pump, and lots of cursing, I found that the fuel line at the tank was blocked. Ran a wire into the tank cleared the blockage an then installed an inline fuel filter about a foot from the tank. She fired right up after months of not running

Did you later inspect the tank for sludge build-up or clean it ? I think mine will have to be removed and cleaned somehow. It looks pretty bad. I'm trying not to take on to many things right now.

I dropped my tank and had it cleaned from a radiator shop, they can make it look really nice! Also you can get a great reproduction of the tank.
