How safe is it to buy a vinfage chevy without a title? How would I register it and get a title? It is a mid thirties car from South America that has no title. I have no idea what are the steps to protect myself so that I would be able to title it.

The first thing I would do is call the Department of Motor Vehicles in New Jersey and explain to them what you are considering and ask them what they would require you to provide to obtain a New Jersey title and registration. I would also call a customs broker and find out what you would need to be able to get the car into the United States.

Many states didn't issue titles until the 30s and some apparently still don't for older cars. So checking with the authorities in your state is a great idea. They can tell you what you need. Some DMV folks are not up on the antique car title requirements so might not give a totally accurate answer. You might have to look online yourself to double check what they tell you.

in Illinois they have a bonded title process. you prepare some documents, purchase a bond the cost of which is based on value, State Farm did the 3yr bond on my 23, they then send an officer out 18 months later, to inspect vehicle and engine numbers you have supplied and they then stamp that number (or make one up) in frame and issue title. process took 2 years cost me a grand, very disgusting. 3yrs later bond expired and also got some additional paperwork from state. would have to be the deal of the day to go thru that again. Illinoid also give you hell on out of state title transfers. very sick.

Bought my first Antique with only bill of sale...

took about 3 months to get the paperwork organized and a title issued for mine. just remember ONLY give them the info they ask for and NO MORE. better to have to go back and forth a few times then give them too much and that raise more questions, concerns, issues... Everyont I know that has done this agrees. Give them what they ask for.

The title they issued was based off the engine serial number and description based on the name chevrolet used for that model year & series.
