Gents, if a valve (intake or exhaust) is stuck open, will the piston hit it?

The valves are set quite deep into the combustion chamber on a 1929-1933 so the will not hit the piston.

If you have a stuck valve, lubricate the "stem" liberally with WD-40 or your own lube of choice and gently tap on the rocker arm when held down in contact with the valve stem. After a good soaking, and expiration of time, run the engine and continue to apply lubrication.

I've used penetrating oil and a rubber hammer with moderate blows on the rockers to free up valves

Hello John Cunningham,
Sometimes a stuck valve might have it's valve spring fully compressed and therefore will not move much with mallet blows. If this is the case, both pushing on the valve from inside the cylinder and tapping on the rocker arm are needed. Lower the piston, remove spark plug, fill cylinder with clothes line rope leaving a length out for retrieval. Raise piston to push up valve from inside. Use steady pressure while tapping from above. Another suggestion is to use a tap and die set tap handle to attach to the valve stem and twist and pull up on the valve. This requires having the piston up to keep valve from falling into the cylinder and removing the rocker arm and spring from the valve. Soaking with penetrating oil is key.
