But if i pull the light switch and the tail light works..won,t they work on the brake lights...or is there another filment in the bulb for the brake light?

Sure...There has to be another filament for the brake light...Pull the bulb and there should be two lead connections...
Hard to install the wrong bulb as it has a different socket pin configuration...
Another use for your ohm meter...check between the lead and the side of the case...of course both should read zero...If you see any dis-coloration on the glass, it's most likely no good anyway....

The headlight switch does not have to be on for the brake lights to work. That circuit is hot all the time. Any time you press the brake pedal the circuit is energized. Yes there is a separate filament in the bulb for the brake light.

Thanks everyone for your help...I replaced the bulbs and cleaned up the brake switch..and now I have lights..
