Anybody have a picture of the AOS frame markings for a 1933? I have good pictures of 1932 & 1934 but not 1933. 1932 is different than 1934. You can send pictures to jiaccino@amphi.com
Thank you, Joe

I'm glad their car frames are better than the water heater I bought from them.

Joe, is you '34 photo one of mine? If not I'll send you one. It was a bit faded but legible.

hi Pat
Yes. I have 1931, 1932 & 1934. AO Smith changed the format somewhere between 1932 & 1934. Not trying to do a high point vehicle. I just want it to be right...Joe

I too wish they stayed with frames instead of water heaters

Mike,

AO Smith is a steel company. They used to make frames for at least GM. They also made pipe for pipelines. The frames they made were stenciled with a date and some other info which I never figured out. Here's what was on my parts car's frame:

Between the front running board bracket and the center body bracket. I put mine on the driver's side, should be on the other side.

All frame stencils I have found are on the left frame rail between the running board irons.

I meant to say driver's side. On the parts car they were on the passenger side.

I think it's this body bolt you see above the photo of the original stencil.

Now I'm really confused. Are they supposed to be on the Passenger side or the Drivers side. I've looked on my 33 on the Drivers side and I don't see anything. I don't think the frame has ever been painted since new.

On my '31 the stencil was on driver's side, between brake cross shaft and rear R/B bracket. I posted a pic in members photos in Nov 2011, read "AOS 3/18/31 D-3 SP/". My car is a Canadian model Special Coach (like a deluxe in U.S.) and I figure the SP/ may be shorthand for SPecial?

It may have had to do with which side the guy with the paint can was standing on the line . When I posted my stencil on another forum, someone said that on his Buick, the stencil was upside down.

Now all we need is someone who owns a 1933 to pop in here with some thoughts. I guess the biggie is the change. 1931 & 1932 had a format of mm/dd/yy. 1934 had mm-dd-yy, soooo....what did they do in 1933? Thanks, Joe

Joe - I'll try to get a look at my '33 Frame as soon as I can. Now that I've read this post I have a better understanding of what I'm looking for. Tom

A.O.Smith is still in the frame business. They also make the blue Harvistore silos and once made the Smith Flyer, a go-cart type automobile with a 5th driving wheel that hung off the back of the car.
Stay away from their water heaters.

At one time AOS was here in Milwaukee and produced many frames. There would be piles of them in the storage lots.
In 1997 they sold the frame business to Tower Automotive. Tower left here about 10 years ago. They are just tearing down/converting the factory now.

Would a 1933 Truck 1 1/2T yield the same markings on the frame, between the running brackets?

My 1936 1-1/2 ton truck has a stamped mark in the rear crossmember. It is an S inside a circle. I tried to get a photo, but could not get a good one. The circle is 3/4 to 1 inch. Forgot to measure. S for Smith??
