I'm looking for R12 to recharge the a/c in my 1966.
I see it on eBay, but they ask for an EPA certificate which I don't have. My mechanic is going to do the work and he can order the freon.
Anybody know where to get it (especially near Seattle?).

I have purchased several cans off eBay. Just keep looking and contact them for their policy.

The Seattle Craigslist R12 price is right in the ball park. I see R12 at swap meets occasionally and the price ranges from $15 to $25 each for a 12oz item. Still using it in my '68 pickup.

Thanks guys... I called on that listing.. will know more tomorrow. I've seen it at $30 a can on eBay... plus shipping... plus certificate issue. Ouch.
This is new for me. I used R12A before. But I want to get away from that explosive stuff.
SUNDAY UPDATE: There are now 3 cans in my shop. Only five more to find. :-)

Do not use anything but R-12 or retrofit the system to R 134. Blends can cause problems with the system and equipment.

Yeh, I'm finding out WAY MORE than I ever wanted to know.
Also found some R12 for $20 a can. eBay has lots for $25-30.
The oil used with R12 is the major problem if you go to R134. The R134 needs to be used with some specific synthetic oil with absolutely no residue from the R12 oil at all. Otherwise it hardens into place.
Here is some supporting info about what you could end up with if you mixed different kinds. They really are all across the board.

Anybody know where to get it (especially near Seattle?). Craig's list worked best for me...but not the small 12 or 16 oz cans. I bought 3 of the bulk 30 pound containers that look like LP tanks for you gas grill. On a per pound basis, it was a bargain compared to small cans. None of the tanks were full...all left over from projects or cars long gone. Used it on a 72 442 Olds. If you get near MN, I can hook you up.

Thanks... If I leave tomorrow then I'll be there by next Thursday!!! ha ha....
Yep, the 30 lb tanks are the way to go. I found one here for sale for about $600. I decided to let him keep it... Ha!!
Since I got my car back with the original R12 in it, man-oh-man is it cold... I can hardly wait to test it in New Mexico and Arizona in two months!!

I still have about a case of small cans of R12. I inquired at the Post Office and the guy said they couldn't ship R12. Can that be correct?
I also have a small tank of R22.

Going rate is $30 per can for R12. I buy all I can get my hands on at the swap meets.

If anyone's interested I have some of the 1 pound cans of R12. I won't be using them because I also have some 30 pound cylinders.

I work for a local auctioneer and I found some R-12 at an auction we were setting up. Bought the 3 12oz cans for 15.00. If you have the time, it might be worth looking at the items at auctions. Just a suggestion.

Good morning toolman. I'm not actively trying to sell that R12 although I'm open to the idea.
Rather than sell it to someone who would just resell it I would prefer to work something out with someone who has or can help me find some things I'm seeking for my '36 pickup. Examples of items I'd still like to find even after owning this pickup since September 1965 are a fan shroud upper 1/2, pristine gas tank and 1936 carburetor.
Just like the parts I'm seeking R12 is only becoming more rare and valuable. I guess I could see what it's actually selling for on ebay.
I can actually buy R12 legally in California. About 25 years ago I got the necessary license. It was a total no-brainer. I sat through a 2 hour "course" in which the answers to a test were taught, took and passed the test and was issued the license. All you other do-it-yourselfers out there could do the same thing.
Charging an AC system with R12 or R134 requires only a vacuum pump, a manifold gauge set available inexpensively from many sources, a scale if dispensing from a 30 pound cylinder and the refrigerant and compressor oil itself.
I will check ebay and see what the stuff if going for these days.

I'd be interested in buying, or swapping, for enough R12 to recharge my a/c.
What is the model number of the '36 carb that you're looking for?
PS. Can anybody get their R12 transported to the 4-cylinder tour next week?

Bill,
Thanks for your note. The carbs for 1936 were Model 334s (stamped 265) and Model 335s (stamped 279). Also useful would be a Model 569s that was a replacement for the 334 and 335 using updated castings combined with a flat throttle arm and metering compatible with the 30s era cars/trucks.
There has been a 334s listed on ebay for months at $49.99 and nobody is interested. That is an indicator of the value of those W-1 cores.
The 12 ounce freon cans seem to be selling in the $20-30 range. I'm keeping the 30 pound cylinder for my 1971 Dodge van and 1978 El Camino. It won't be long until a full 30 pound cylinder is worth $1K.
What carbs do you have?

Why not change it to 134A? Flush system to remove oil, change O rings, dry with air, refill with compatible oil, pump down and add 134A. Not as efficient but works well enough.

There are multiple sources that sell R-12 on eBay.
I agree with Chipper that you should consider converting to R-134. The cooling performance is comparable and there are no issues with supply or places that will service the system. Many shops today do not maintain a complete set of separate equipment so they can work on R-12 systems.
Unless your Nova has an exceptional system I expect that it has lost all of the refrigerant in it. That means the system has been exposed to moist air and the receiver-drier needs replaced. It will not take much more effort and cost to convert to R-134 than to get your R-12 system operating.

It's often said that R12 is no longer available. ... It's often said that buying or selling R12 is illegal. That's not true either. Anyone selling R12 is required to verify that the buyer has an EPA Section 609 certification to work with mobile vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems.

I can say convert at the last option, the systems do not cool as good with R134 I have bought cars and converted them back to R12 as my dad bought cases and has 2 cylinders in our stash plus I always buy when I come across a decent deal as we both have the EPA Cert. Here is something else to keep in mind the auto manufactures are starting to go to a new system and freon so I have been buying extra 134 as I see some day the same thing will happen.
