Yes.. I didn't realize the irony of that until just now. It has NOT been a network problem.... We are getting slammed with repeated requests to our server. Last night one address was hitting us over 100 times a minute. THAT's why you all have seen the sluggish performance.

Now -- with this new company providing the network "connectivity" for us, they also offer some really great Spamming protection. So, not only did they reduce the number of "hops" that each of you need to get to the VCCA server, but they also are filtering out some more of the "bad guys".

I've got my fingers crossed. Lord knows, that my eyes are already crossed -- this has been a tough one to resolve. It just shows that our site is high-profile enough to get the extra attention from the spammers around the world.

I have been saying I haven't had any of the problems others have been having. Yesterday it locked up and I couldn't get back on in the morning. Also had trouble getting on last night. No problems today.

The latest (and apparently MOST SUCCESSFUL) change was made just after midnight last night (about 23 hours ago). So all performance observations from BEFORE that are now irrelevant.

This is a new era. bolt Please reset your clocks!!

I just blocked a guy who accessed our server 49 times in 13 seconds (just a few minutes ago). The good news is that he was one of only THREE "bad guys" that I saw in the log files. That's down from about 20 to 30 yesterday.

10:00 AM PDT: Tried to get to the site and it was a no go. After loading for about 25 minutes I was finally able to get to Chevy Chatter at approx. 10:25 AM PDT.

Yep... confirmed.

I went through the logs and found a 29 minute blank spot.

Just posted a trouble ticket.

Also I added another 1,000 IP addresses last night to our BAN file. It appears to be working very nicely. The total traffic volumes to our server has dropped significantly.

Yep, they've come back to me now. They said that during the backup of the entire server (of which we are ONE client), they noticed an abnormally high use rate. To protect everyone's data integrity, and to prevent the server from crashing - they shut down OUR virtual server and allowed the backups to complete.

I've posted a follow-up note back to them. I won't repeat it here, but it is letting them know that we can't continue with this kind of poor performance.

My wife and I have a web site for our old historic house and it is hosted FOR FREE by a company that hosts sites for a multitude of businesses and non-profit organizations, and in the last two years that our web site has been on the Internet it has not been down at all.....not even once.

Billy Boy Barker, you have got to be pulling your hair out over these morons. I will say that you are dealing with it well and you seem to have lots of patience with these dudes.

Thanks Russell. It's more of the same.

Your trace reports show me that "most" of the network hops were doing their thing in good time. Once in a while, one leg was excessively slow -- but they still managed to complete the task.

I received more feedback from the HOST. I'll post some of it here for everyone to read.

We understand your concern. We have a weekly backup system which usually runs on every Sunday 12 AM (EDT). Since the weekly backup is running, there will be some temporary load issues in the server and this leads to the slow down. Some of the VPS in the servers are also running individual backups in the same time which is also reason for the load issues. We have notified this issue to those customers inorder to avoid such issue in future. Also we have stopped the containers that were causing the load on the hardware node temporarily so that to stabilize the hardware node. Unfortunately, your container was also one among them.

Since the load spike was abnormal at the hardware node we were unable investigate the exact reason for the load issue in your VPS in detail at that time. That is the reason why we have temporarily stopped your VPS.

We have scheduled the weekly backup on weekend so that to avoid the load issues during business hours. Also, we assure you that we will take necessary investigation steps to ensure that similar incidents will not occur in future. Let us know if you have any queries.

Here's the reply from our Hosting company. It is the same that I've been saying all along. Just telling me that there's an outage isn't good enough. You need provide "supporting evidence"... I think that when I get a few minutes that I'll lock this thread and start a new one with FULL DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO REPORT AN OUTAGE.

I've been online with the HOST for the past hour. Couldn't get access to the web page nor the Chat page.

Slowdown was approximately 8:30 pm until 9:45 pm PDT - 7/31 Wednesday.

Did anyone else experience this?

At 8:00 AM PDT I was on the site. I hit "refresh" to see any new posts and I was no longer able to get the site to load. The downtown time for me was from 8:00 AM until 9:24 AM PDT.

Seems like the VCCA is paying good money for a lot of downtime from these dudes.
