There was an official dealer installed 1948 genuine Chevrolet turn signal unit for 1948. It is shown I believe in the accesory catalog for 1948. Many of the accesories that were sold by Chevrolet were dealer installed.
I will be putting an original one in a 1948 Chevy probably this summer.

The 1948 switch was more or less round. The pilot light was built into the top of the housing Kind of a curvy one piec chrome lever projected out of the left side of then housing. The end of the lever was kind of flattened out. It wasnot self canceling. It was painted to match the column if I remember correctly.
It was Guide as Guide was a division of GM.

My eyes are getting older, but I believe that your first picture which shows 3 different Guide Turn Signals has 2 - 1948 turn signal switches shown near the top of the photo. The 2 large pictures which shows an installed turn signal is maybe a 1949 (?) turn signal switch, not a 1948 switch.

I believe that in your first picture with the 3 turn signal switches, it shows a round raised embossment on the front which makes it 1948 in my book. I do not believe that the 1948 is stamped with "L" or "R" in small round circles like the 1949.

The top right switch is for a 1948.
1940 was the first year to offer directional lights on a passenger car.

I could tell better if the pilot light was on top and see the front of the housing also. In other words a better picture as it would be seen by the driver.

I guess something got lost in the translation here. Is this a 1948 switch with the R & L on it? Or does the correct switch not have the R & L? Did the correct switches have self cancelling available?

Richard although both switches are Guide 6002,they are both diferent,Toolman feels this is a 49 switch and Gene confired the switch above,on the red felt is the 48...the correct 48 swtch is extremmly hard to find.Neither are self-cancelling
