Ken,I wonder just how many guys you have helped with that very picture. It was almost two years ago you posted that picture to help figure out how to mount my horns.

As you may remember I was missing the stock foot scrapers and not until a thread such as this did I ever know mine were a poor replacement...Now there support caps???Would have never known,I don't even remember them when I bought the 48 meny years ago.... What is the trick to getting the original style hose clamps tight useing a slotted screw driver as designed

Russell, I try to get the most mileage possible out of my pictures . Bruce.......regarding those caps.......and you thought you were finished searching for parts, huh? .....and tightening those original style hose clamps.....now you know why they don't use them any more

What is the trick to getting the original style hose clamps tight using a slotted screw driver as designed Try putting a little Vaseline around the inside and on the tab where it overlaps. Doesn't take much but helps it slip enough to get it tight. You can also put a little black gasket maker on the inside of the hose to seal it better. That also doesn't take much.

Wouldn't call it a trick, but out of necessity. I use a hex screwdriver insert. Insert it into a 1/4" socket. Then what ever extensions and swivels needed to get it on the head. Just be careful not to over tighten with all that leverage you now have.
I wonder if maybe some type sealer on the fitting before the hose goes on would help????
So far, I have not had any leaks at the fittings. Knock on wood!

FYI,I received some new original style clamps from COT40's yesterday and guess what,they have philips head bolts on the clamps??I now need to replace the bolt?should I?

Ok, I see now. These must have been a 42-48 thing. Seems that something would have been in there to plug that hole. I would imagine that their life span would have been short, relative to the life of the car, that is. Charlie

Went out to the back garage today and found the original pressure cap from my 1950. All the lettering is stamped into the metal.on the top - on one side it says "turn tight" with an arrow piointing in the clockwise direction. On the other side it says "remove slowly" with a counter clockwise arrow. some patent number in tiny lettering near one ear and a small AC #4 (4 pound), and Ac #501 next to the other ear. The center of the rivet in the center is dished in. The later cap has never "open when hot" in raised letter on one side. Stamped letter on the other side that say "inspect in fall and spring", In small letter 4 lb and RC2-all this in a tiny circle. A larger AC with a circle around it next to the other ear. Te center rivet is flat on top. alos says stainless in small letters on top.

Well, now I'm sorry for even bringing it up... Whats this Bruce, about a 4lb radiator cap...? I have a 3 lb lying around and have been thinking of trying it as I've been losing quite a bit of water out the overflow tube...I know, I have an after market "over-flow tank" but haven't had the time to install it...Sits on a shelve with all the other well intentioned stuff I bought off eBay...

Kevin I have never seen green water under my 48 with or without the over flow tank..At least not until I change those clamps with the straight slotted bolts???

Straight slotted bolts...Got me there buddy...Not sure what you mean...Anyway, I never see the fluid on the ground...It pools up in that "tray" below the radiator...Then, I guess it blows off when I drive...'Cause every few days the radiator is low...I can tell when it gets low, 'cause the temp. gauge suddenly goes higher...Time to add some more... Are you referring to the hose clamps...? Never had a problem on any vehicle...I also add a 'fingers" worth of grease anytime I install a hose...Makes it way easier for me or preferably the next guy to remove said radiator hose (s)

For the Judges:could you tell the differences of the accessary oil filters from 41-54,other then color? Are you serious? I a very few more years, not many will even know what that thing hanging on the manifold is. Maybe in your area, there are a good many "qualified" judges left. Down here, we have to import judges. Also, usually have to judge "outside" their expert years. Someone who really knows a '38 but not so much a '48. So unless that oil filter is hot pink canister with purple top and highlighted with neon lights, I believe you will slip by. But then again? Now the radiator ?. There are no marking on the back side of the top tank??
