That then would explain the sign "First Chevrolet Cars Produced in Flint Since 1942."

I'm willing to bet they were set up to build trucks, and just kept going with that from '45 to '47. Anyone have a '45 truck with a data plate?

My data includes truck information also. The Flint plant column has X marks like the passenger columns.

From The Flint Journal...

"Chevrolet built chassis parts, engines and sheet metal body parts for small and medium-duty military trucks and DUKWs - amphibious trucks known as "ducks.'' (The vehicle had a system that could inflate or deflate the tires while in motion, like that on today's Hummer.) Chevrolet Manufacturing in Flint also made aircraft engine parts and the Staghound armored car, which was tested on vacant property owned by Michigan School for the Deaf. Staghounds were built for the British."

Another happening at the time was Chevrolet built a new plant on VanSlyke Road that was set up for automobile production. The old factory had a major flood at the time of the move to the new one.

This has always been one of my favourites...1950, Kaufmann's Chevrolet.

Picture #1 Why do they all have white hoods?
Picture #2 I wonder about their parking plan, looks kind of sloppy/random/confused/helter skelter? Like a Walmart parking lot!
Picture #3 Cool! Really nice picture.
Thanks for all of the neat pictures!

I wonder if that is some kind of a cover over the hood.

Yes, I wondered that also, but I'm not that familiar with cars that old. I didn't think they would all have white hoods! wink

The white has me beat too. I note the closest cars have white tops too but the white seems inconsistent in all rows. If it was some form of transport protection, one would expect the crown of the fenders to be covered too.

It looks like a cover, and it's coming off of the second car in the left row. The stickers on the windshield say "It's easy to pay for a Chevrolet"

Okay all of you 4 cylinder experts... is there any chance that this showroom displays the new Copper Cooled Chevrolet? It's hard to tell if that grille is filled with radiator or louvers...

Are those all white tires?

In front looks like the 1/2 ton chassis which would be taken to a body builder and completed.

I like those wide white walls on the BelAir, which is sitting on a turn table in the South Tacoma Chevrolet showroom. In 1939 my dad traded his '32 coach in on a '37 coach that was being displayed on that same turn table and my '33 coupe was displayed on it back in the late 60s during a Puget Sound Region car show there. The showroom is still showing cars, but no longer a Chevrolet dealership.

Shame about the 50 convertible. The accident drew a huge crows. If it had been a 41 convertible, there would have been an even bigger crowd. Would have too! Agrin

Do you think that there sorry old Pontiac drifted over and caused the 50 driver to have to choose the light pole or, in the alternative, being scrapped down it side? bike

Those looking at the 1951 Bel Air are a paratrooper (see bloused boots, a "leg", and an airman (hands in his pockets.) Agrin

Bruce, I have 6 photos of Chevrolet assembly line activity from early 50's to early 60's including one of '53 Corvettes. Don't know how to insert them here, perhaps I will place them in members photo section. Is there a simple process to set them in this topic? If you pm your email, I will send them to you, and you can post them if they have not been posted before.

Tonight's photos are sent in from Gunsmoke. A nice assortment of Chevrolets on their way to the end of the factory line...

First is from the make shift body assembly area in Flint that was used to make the 1953 Corvettes...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

A model shows off all of the chrome about to go onto a 1955...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

Next are a couple of Kodachromes from Life magazine of the 1959 production line...

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

[Linked Image from i150.photobucket.com]

And a brand new 1964 is ready to roll...

This may be a guess... But is there any chance that the parts about to go onto the 1955 are gold plated, and about to go onto the 50 millionth Chevrolet produced?

Bruce, that '55 may be the anniversary one. I know there were a ton of publicity photos of it so maybe somewhere there's a full color version of all the fancy trim before it went on there. Good guess!

Here's a few more 'full figured' Chevrolets from the 40's for the good of the cause. Apologies if any of these are reposts, I have a bazillion pics and I can't remember where I've shared them / borrowed them from. :)
