You'll need one for the rear, to keep DMV happy...I don't recall ever seeing one one the front...Their fairly easy to obtain, and not expensive...

You may have read one of my many, rambling posts...I think it was yesterday...About the problem I have even getting the cops to acknowledge my presents, let alone notice if I even have proper tags on the car...which I don't bother with. Things might be different down your way...

Even with '47 license plates, I still have people ask me, "What year is it...?" Just you wait, I swear...lol

Yes, the DMV will require the correct year "tab", before completion of the paper work...

Month and year stickers will be coming in the mail with two metal "toppers"...Stamped metal tabs large enough for each sticker that DMV would like you to bolt thru the top holes in the plate on either side...You know...Month on the left, Year on the right...I keep them in the glove box, just in case I'm pulled over...That's what I'd tell the cop, "Heck, anyone with a screw-driver can remove them. Here they are...In the glove box for safe keeping. Along with my registration...And insurance card." Ha

In Washinton there was never a 48 plate made, although there was a 1948 sticker that was to be displayed in the "front"?window. In this state you must register front and back plate but if they are vintage, only the rear must be displayed and nothing else

That's interesting, Bruce. Perhaps we could get folks from other states to describe the YOM Vintage Plate situation in their state...

Here in California you must have and display matching plates, front and rear...Having Vintage Plates really gives your car "that look"...Modern plates just don't have it...

Now, price is a sticking factor...I've seen matching plates in excellent condition start at $550 dollars...Mine are in good shape and I was able to talk the seller down to $300...Check eBay for "sticker shock..." I haven't yet mounted my front plate, mostly out of fear of damage ( I think it's a kinda flimsy way to mount, on the bumper front and center ) I've got a side mount from my '53 truck I plan on using...I know, not original but I like it pulled in "close" and off the bumper style...

Come to think of it I don't recall ever seeing a 1946 CA Plate...In 1948 and on up, plates weren't replaced, they had "toppers" that covered the "year", that were sent out in the mail every year...I've seen them in antique stores and of course on eBay...

The restored plates "2" I purchased for my 48 Aero 10 years ago cost under a $100,I will post a pick when I get time...In WA.when you register your collector plates it's a one time deal for the life of the car,no tabs etc.I think it was under $100...You must own the car
