Does the rubber boot on a '41 vacuum shift cylinder serve a purpose other than looks? Does it help contain vacuum in the cylinder? Thanks, Sid

It's to keep out dirt and trash. Mine is torn, but still shifts fine. I have a new one, I just haven't taken the time to install it.

Thanks Cleon, I'll move that item to further down on my wish list. Mine is cracked, but still there. Sid

These are a bear to get on and rip easily..I have just found a NOS cylinder and will be installing it soon..The boot is very brittle and am sure I will need to replace it..Is there a trick to getting these boots on?maybe soaking in some type of lube??

When installing the boot, make sure the women and children are out of earshot, because it's like trying to put socks on a rooster.
