I usually have had good luck buying stuff on eBay, and for these old cars (mine is a'31 Coach in restoration) it is one of the few easy sources for rare parts. So 2 years ago I was pleased to see an original "fully and professionally rebuilt" fuel pump listed with a buy it now for $135. I bought it, had a superficial look at it when it arrived, all shiny like new, and put it away for 2 years until about a month when I installed it (meanwhile lost all the invoice paperwork etc).
2 weeks ago I started the car for first time in 4 years. Fuel began to squirt our of top of pump. tightened the 6 screws a bit, but still a fine mist spraying out top. Realized the top had a fine crack. Oh well, what to do, so I pulled the top off and put the top off my old unit on in its place. Tightened it down but could not get it to stop leaking around gasket, a rather dangerous issue if gas gets into engine etc. After several attempts to get it sealed including adding a thin gasket, decided to take it off and disassemble it. Bingo, the guy (or girl)who rebuilt the pump must have had a base for a car that used an angled pump. To make it fit for a chev, he drilled and tapped 6 new holes in the base, with some inward of the proper locations, and some so far to outer edge that they nearly cut through edge. As well, since the original had a raised mating surface for the diaphragm, and hollow areas between, the new holes were not in the hollows, meaning a tight fit would be impossible. So I pulled out the new diaphragm put it in my old pump and am now back in business. So a big rip off, $135 for a diaphragm, and several hours of aggravation.
I hope the guy/girl is not a supplier of this site, and those buying these types of things on eBay beware, and check thoroughly when you get them! If he/she is reading
