I got the glove compartment open on my '40. I removed the lock cylinder and removed the tumbler (guts) per the service manual. I found a broken tab inside which explains why it wouldn't open. I'm going to post in the "parts wanted" for a replacement lock cylinder. Just curious if the broken arm can be serviced by itself? I can't tell how its put in. Thanks Don

Watch ebay as well. Did you end up having to cut up the new liner?

I was able to get my hand up on top of the glove box and used the tip of my finger.
What year lock cylinder will fit correctly and allow me to use my lock cylinder?

With the one tumbler removed you should be able to use the cylinder and have it actually work.

That is for a truck, the mount is angled and my car is flat. I believe that 40-57 car are all the same. I solved the problem today when I picked up a 51 4dr at a swap meet. Don

With all of the broken pieces out of the way the lock will most likely work with its normal key.
If you find another tumbler to replace the broken 1, assemble the tumblers in place insert the key and file the out of shape tumbler so that the barrel turns freely in the cylinder.

The tumbler in mine is ok. The broken piece is from the arm that moves the latch down so the glove box door can be opened. With that piece broken of the latch would not come down far enough for it to clear the striker. I bought a parts car at a swap meet and took the latch out of it and put my tumbler in and got the car put back together.

I thought it was a tumbler that had broken causing the barrel to jamb.
