Hi, I'm new here and wonder if someone with a '38 business coupe can tell me where they got a trunk mat?

Well, either way, Chevs of the 40s has your mat for $150 at Chevs of the 40s or you can try one of my favorites, AAA of Louisiana who has it listed for $125 at AAA Parts
I like AAA but you have to ask first to make sure he has it in stock befor placing the order.

You can check a little farther on this but I believe the coupe did not have a trunk mat and the wood shelf was painted black

Yes I refered to the parts book and the 1938 features manual and the coupe did not have a trunk mat. the first year a coupe had one was 1941. In 1938 the sedans had a mat that was black ribbed rubber that looked like the stuff that you can buy off the roll at a hardware store. In 1939 theey used a molded mat with a border etc. that was a bit fancier.
