Hi there,
Just completed repairs to my 1/4 window winder in the front doors.
I obtained an old winder mechanism from Jerry, in Kansas.
It was slightly different to mine in that the 1/4 window frame stem went into the large cog inside the casing and not into a slot that was cast into the cog on the top.
First I had to graft the winder arm from my winder onto the unit from Jerry.
My winder cog was broken and his was intact.
when that repair was done, I then discovered that the window frame stem was to short one end and did not reach the large main cog in the unit.
So out everything had to come out of the door, and I welded in an extra 25 mm from an old bolt to enable the stem to reach the inside of the cog wheel.
The pictures tell the storey, and I checked the other door and the winder was very stiff and if left, like that, would probably break the casting, as had happened on the other door.
After much fiddling with the unit , I ended up making a gasket and fitting it in-between the two half of the casting and it then worked nice and easy, with out any strain.
I put it down to the fact that aluminium "grows" over time, and the pivot hole to the main cog were now a bit smaller than when manufactured and were causing the tightness in the winder.
The gasket gave it clearance that it needed...........

hope that this is of help to others who may have this problem in the future
cheers
