Ed, you're right. I just got a chance to look at the cowl vent knob, and it is plastic. It looked like wood, so I just figured it was. I'm batting about a thousand on getting things wrong.
By the way, that same plastic is on the knobs for the window cranks--is that right? I had supposed that all the knobs should be the ivory colored plastic, but the simulated brown wood plastic is on the cowl vent and on those window cranks.
And yes, like you, I'm a Buckeye. I'm about 4 or 5 counties east of you. I lived in Cincinnati in the early 80's, when I attended UC.
Thanks again for the help.

Glovebox.......The 38 Master was the only one that had those "Mottled Brown" knobs on the dash controls and the window hardware.

The 38 MASTER DELUXE had the ivory colored knobs on the dash knobs and window hardware.

Hang in there, there is no question you can have with your car that someone on this chat site cant answer. when in doubt ASK.
All the help you will ever need is on this site.

I live a few blocks away from U.C.....My car is a 38 Master business coupe. GOOD LUCK....ED

BTW....your horn button (on the steering wheel) is not the right one

The mottled brown was standard on the Master. It makes it difficult for us Master owners who want to buy replacements because the vendors only sell ivory replacements for the MD.

Say, Ed, on that horn button--is this what I want:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NORS...arts_Accessories&hash=item27bb8ae374

or is it this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1937...arts_Accessories&hash=item3368435823

Right now, my horn button is the 3rd (middle) of that bank of 5 switches under the ash tray. I just tried the horn button in the center of the steering wheel, and it has no give to it at all--nothing that would let me activate the horn by pressing on it. Do you know how that button comes out? I figure I have to get it out, to see what's under it, to determine whether I need just the horn button, or the horn button assembly. Or are those the same thing?

Assuming the horn button is original, use a small flat blade screwdriver and go down the side of the button and pry up. Continue this procedure all around the button until you can get a hold of it and pull it out. The only thing holding it in is the rubber bellows.

To replace, aline the two prongs so they enter their correct holes, and then start feeding the rubber bellows back into the recess it came out of.

Replacement bellows are available from the Filling Station. Mine arrived a couple of weeks ago.

The top link you show looks to be the correct assembly. The way the horn works is when you push the horn button the "S" wire contacts the side of the hole(s) where it goes through the steering wheel while at the same time contacting the top of the mast jacket bushing where there is a copper contact connected to a wire running down the center of the mast jacket. When this contact is made it completes the circuit and honks the horn. Many times when an accessory button is attached it's because the wire in the mast jacket has broken or the contact area on the bushing gets so dirty contact isn't made properly.

I may get one with the emblem in it, and just abandon the radio; it doesn't work, and I figure it'll take $300 to $500 to fix it, so I can pick up a couple of AM stations.
I think I have part of it figured out--the car restorer just played a game by shuffling the switches when he reinstalled them. He must have had a great sense of humor.
I still don't know why my ignition is way over on the left. I can't find any car that does that. But I bet I could just move my ignition over to where it belongs, then put one of those dummy plugs in the empty spot on the left. Thanks again.

Are you going to leave the dash black or return it to more "natural" colors? If you decide to paint it, you could fill the hole with bondo (or lead) and make it disappear. Otherwise you still have something there that doesn't belong.

Of course, I don't know. Did some '38 Masters come with a black dash?

Glovebox......Tiny is correct in what he told you about the horn button on the steering wheel.
BTW...I don't think things are as bad as you might think, about your dash controls. To me it looks like the past owner used the same holes that were there and just switched every thing around. The holes look like they are in the right places in relation to a undisturbed dash, he just moved things around. He may have made some (or all) of the holes bigger to mount some of those weird things he installed but you can bush them down with some creative engineering.
The only hole you will have to patch in the one were the ignition switch is now, you could put in a decorative knock out plug (from a electric supply store chrome, or brushed stainless) if you don't want to fill it in.....GOOD LUCK....ED

Tiny...Us 38 Master Business Coupe owners have to stick together.
Only the other day I was out after dark and when I went to cross the street a 1941 Chev Black MD coupe came speeding around the corner with it's lights off, the driver had a ski mask on and he swerved right at me......We have to be careful these day's...ED

Richard, I'm going to return it to the colors it came with, at least on the interior. Every 38 I see has roughly the same colors. And, BTW, I researched on this site, and I realize there was a slightly different interior color scheme for the Deluxe, as opposed to the one for my lowly Master.
And that's a good idea. I'll fill that hole when I do the interior.
