I see a bunch of show car type 38 chevys have a metal plate the fits bewteen the backside of the bumper and the body . It looks like 1/4" plate and it must have some type of fastener welder to the underside. I guess the purpose is to keep mud and dirt off the body. This plate is for the front and back or just a single panel. This panel is painted to match the car. Anyone ever see this in person? I wonder how you could get a perfect template to be used to cut out this metal.

That is a rear bumper stone deflector. It prevents the stone that strike the back of the bumper from rebounding off the lid or back panels. The 1938-1939 version is the same for sedans and business coupes. They were painted black from the factory....rare and expen$ive. At one time a friend of mine was reproducing them but that was 25 years ago.

Do you know how they were fastened? I don't see any bolt heads on the surface. Would this pat show up in any parts manual?

If we are talking about the same thing, they have tabs that turn down and go between the bumper bolts and the the bumper brackets. My '37 is missing the stone guard and since I drive a lot of gravel, my trunk has a lot of rock chips on it. I have a sport sedan so it is probably more likely to get chips than your coupe.

In my 29-39 parts book, I believe it is group # 7.833 deflector, (rear bumper) part # 598013.

Ha, I can't give you a photo because mine is missing There is an illustration in the parts book if you have one. I do have one for a 36 coupe but, it doesn't fit 37 or 38.

I'm not sure but I don't think that one on the front is original equipment. The only one I know of is on the rear, it is narrow and doesn't go clear up to the body.

That is a cool looking car but I think it is heavily modified.

Catalog price is 75 cents !!! I'm going to try and make one. I bet I have $300 in it after the paint shop gets finished. I wish I knew how wide the deflector (as the cat. lists it )is. I guess if it was flush against the rear body panel it would damage it if there was ever a slight bump to the bumper. I'll leave a good inch gap for sure. Thanks for thr part number .

I don't have a good pic of my gravel deflector. This pic I took on last fall's tour and shows a bit of it. I believe I&I sells repops. ![[Linked Image from i47.photobucket.com]](http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f167/Tinys1938/IMG_0244s.jpg)

I thought a 37 and 38 bumper were the same. This guy swears it won't fit. The ones I've seen were custom types. The kind you have must be really rare.

I too wonder what the difference between the 1937 and 1938 bumpers is?
I bought one of these panels from Gene off his 1939 and the curve doesn't seem to match the arc in my bumper. I thought maybe GM Canada had used the 37 style over a couple years but just realized while typing that maybe the 39 is different. Though I seem to recall Gene thinking it would fit when I bought it. Only been a couple years but no time to really look at...argh...

The 1937 and and 1938 bumpers are VERY different. The 1937 Master had a flat type bumper and used a deflector for that bumper only. The M.D. had a deep channel bumper and used itsspecial deflector. The 1937 deflectors were "slanted" and had raised areas so as to not contact the bumper brackets. The 1938-1939 deflectors arethe same as are the bumpers EXCEPT the 1939 front bumper has a deeper curve . The rear stone deflector fits all 1938 sedans and busines coupe and all1939 sedan and coupes. The 1938 rumble seat coupe has a bumper with a big curvein the center so as toclear the exposed spare tire. All in all there were SIX different rear deflectors for 1937 and only one for 1938-and 1939 models.

Steve, I just emailed you some photos of a stone guard I have. It came off a '38. I would post them here but I haven't used the Photobucket in so long, I would have to relearn how to do it all over again. You can post them here if you like. Beamer

Looks very much like mine did before the restoration. They are easily bent and difficult to straighten.
