Hi I was looking at the post “photo identification request” and I’m a little confused on 1933 only. There is mention of a “Master” and an “Eagle” in 1933. I was under the impression there was no Master in 1933, just Eagle and Mercury and the Master was adopted in 1934, Master & Standard. Everything I have read supports this. What am I missing?

On the Eagle,When you wind down the door window,the post which seperates the door window and the vent window winds down with the door window.On a Master the divider is stationary and doesn't go down with the door window.The Mercury and the Standard are one in the same.

To go a little further with Mike has said, nothing has ever been found from Chevrolet direct that would indicate the Standard would be called the Mercury. It seems to be a name that was adopted over the years. Both the Standard & the Master were introduced in about March 1933, the Master replacing the Eagle..Joe

Thanks for the information. I'm not sure I ever noticed the difference in them before. Is that the only difference between the two? My 33 is apparently a Master, I would like to see an Eagle in person sometime. I guess I will have that opportunity in Flint.

I can't say for sure as I am quite new to this hobby.I learned this was the easiest way to tell the two apart.There are definitely people on here who probably know every difference between the two.I still have a lot to learn!

There are a couple more differences, that I am aware of. This was the first year for vent windows. They called it the Fisher No Draft (I.C.V.) Individually Controlled Ventilation System and published a 12 page operating manual instructing the user how to open and close the vent windows.

My Eagle model has knobs on the vent windows and Masters have a shorter version of the main window crank handles. Also the door window frames are different from Eagle to Master. I have the 31-32 style trunk handle where as the Master changed slightly.

Yours being a Eagle, does it have a pop out ignition switch?

The vent window sash is different. It has a small tip on the top & bottom where it fits into the vert. run attached to the door glass

My Eagle has the Pop Out ignition.

The Owner's Manual for the Eagle is marked as such on the front cover. The Master is marked Master.

There is a lot of confusion about the models in 33. It is incorrect to say you have a Master Eagle for example. The early 33 was an Eagle. When the Standard was introduced Chevrolet elected to change the name of the top line to Master. Mercury was a FXXD.

That means the Eagle & the Standard had pop out ignitions while the master went to the non pop out.
My Mother used to wash my mouth out with soap when I used the "F" word. :)

As well as the owner manual saying Eagle, Master, or Standard, the serial number plate also was marked as such...correct? My 33 std says "Standard"

The 1934 parts book lists just one eletrolock for 1933 and one for 1934.
The later parts books list the 1934 ele. for 1933 and 1934.....and the original 1933 was discontinued.
Did all the 1933s have a pop-out and some were replaced in the later years with the 1934 style?

The 1934 book shows a plunger type barrel for 1929-1933 and a swivel type barrel for just 1933.
Shows just one replacement lock cylinder for 1933 and another for 1934 (the 1934used the two sided key)

Mine has been replaced at some point in time and has the later switch with the two sided key. When I got the car almost 48 years ago, it had a much later starter bolted on, that didn't mesh right with the ring gear and had to be push started most of the time. When I finally got the correct starter and Starterator linkage hooked up, it worked just fine and I'm just learning right now, that it isn't quite back to original with not having the pop out switch.

In Canada the models were:

EMPIRE MASTER or MAITRESSE in French series C.A. [note the full stops in Canada!]

EMPIRE MASTER/MAITRESSE C.B. ½ TON CHASSIS

EMPIRE STANDARD or REGULIER C.C.
