Does anyone know what a "star" means following the paint code on a 1948 Fleetline. The cowl tag is original and has not been messed with. It says " Paint No 359-* " (379-Dash-Star). I know what the 379 means, just not the star. Thanks.

The asterisk or "star" refers to a foot note or special instruction. Someone will need to find a reference on paint codes that contains a reference to the paint code 359 and "star". Most likely the reference will be in a paint specification book or service news or other Chevrolet literature. I don't find a 359 listed for 1948 so likely it is a special color combination. I do have a listing for code no. 384 with an asterisk and a footnote "West Coast Only - added 5-1-48" in a DuPont paint color book.

I see two numbers above....359 and 379. There is no 359 so I assume that 379 is the paint combination number which is Dove Gray over Battleship Gray. Common 1948 color.
I believe that Sport Beige was a west coast (solid) color added in April.
I see no other notations for 1948 colors in my 1948 literature.

Thanks for the reply.... I'll try again without the fat finger syndrome. The cowl tag has "379 Dash Star" (not 359). Sorry about the confusion. While 379 was Battleship Gray/Dove Gray, this car is solid Dove Gray, with very old paint but I can't tell for sure if part of it has been repainted over the years. Hope that clears up my question. Thanks.
