I went to pick up the coupe at the glass installer(bodyshop) garage today. The glass and rubber look really good. The car had dust all over it. I couldn't wait to get it home and start cleaning it up. I noticed the speedometer still makes a noise after I installed the new cable and lubed the ends. I even shot a little in the speedometer opening. Any other suggestions?

Did you lube the cable itself or just the ends of the cable?

I lubed the cable really well. It sounds like it is in the head connection. It gets louder after 45mph. I got it up to 60 once and it got pretty loud.

When I was a lad, 50+ years ago, an old time mechanic taught me NOT to lube the cable end near (keep lube 10"-12" away from the end) the cable connection. The cable is spiral wound and could carry excess grease in the head, where it could hardend and seize the internal mechanism. I've never had a problem following his advice.

Wish I had known that before today. I lubed everything. The noise level dropped but didn't stop even after the new cable installation. If I could get to the screws to take it out I'd send it off for a rebuild.
