What would be involved in removing the Smog Pump from a 1974 350 VC engine. What is the advantage or disadvantage of doing it. Thanks for your advise.

If it is required to meet emissions requirement in your area, then consider that. i removed the one in my 72 Monte Carlo, because it was a California car, and up here was not required in 72. It made adding headers easier and was just that much less on the front of the engine. i hear they aren't that parasitic in power consumption, so perhaps not really a benefit there. Removing it will increase your hydrocarbon emissions.

It's not how fast you can go, but how good you look at 20 MPH.

Removing it would be a matter of possibly needing a different length fan belt and threading a plug into each of the air pipe connections in the exhaust manifolds.

Advantage would be a reduction of junk on top of the engine and possibly a bit less noise.

Its removal will not change performance - power or gas mileage.
If removes and you everwant to reinstall it the pump will no be reusable.

I don't understand why it would not be reusable later

I guess I might as well leave the pump on since it is a 47,000 mile original Nova. We have driven it 21,000 miles in the last 14 years with no problems except loosing an alternator. Thanks for all your information.

Touring is the way to go.

If you removed it you would have to plug the exhaust manifolds or find earlier versions,I would only do that if the air pipes were shot.
