I am confused by all the license plates on E-bay. For California, is it possible/and how does one take a set pair of (in my case) 1951, yellow on black plates and have them applied legally to my 1951 3/4 ton truck?

Chip,
As I understand it, different states have different rules/regulations/etc. Ore is pretty easy. In fact we only need to have ONE - on the back.
I'd suggest you check with some of the guys in your VCCA region. Lots of guys will be able to tell you how to go about it in Cali.
Or, just contact your local office of Dept of Mtr Vehicles. It is a "cool" look. Good luck with the idea....
Bill.

Hi Chip, If you buy any plates off of Ebay you have to make sure that the plates are clear to use. Older plate numbers can be reused for other kinds of vehicals. If you are going to put them on a truck they must be commercial plates. Then you will also need the correct year sticker for the truck plate. If the plates are stamped for 1951 then you do not need the sticker. I bought plates for my 59 Mercury wagon along with the year sticker and did not have any trouble getting them approved. The year sticker is the same year as the truck. They will be charged as personal plates at renewal time. The most important thing from the seller is that the plates are clear. Hope this helps. You can send me a PM if you have any other questions.

If I were you I would check with THE BUREAU OF MOTOR VEHICLES of your state and not the local registrar. I have had year of manufacture plates on all of my cars for years. Each time there is a new clerk I have to insist that they call Columbus. In Ohio it is quite simple if the clerk knows the policy. There are false rumors floating around all the time.

In Washington State it is a one time fee for collector plates. The 48 Fleetline used 1947 plates(no plates produced in 48)You must register 2 plates but there was never a question about the 1948 sticker that was displayed on the window in that year to specify the proper production date of the car.A cost of $80.for the life on the plates...The plates are silver with forest green text, chef

State of Vermont doesn't allow registering with year of manufacture plates. Either regular passenger car at $80/year or "Exhibition" plates at $16/year. They have the word "Antique" on the plate along with a 3 digit number. The exhibition plate (only one on the back) has extremely limited use such as going to and from a show, club sponsored tour, cruise night, etc. Absolutely NO everyday driving. I had my local legislator propose a bill to allow year of manufacture plates registration, but it hasn't gone anywhere yet. So my 48 Aero is currently registered with an exhibition plate on the back....and I run a 1948 Vermont plate on the front. Knock on my woodgrain dashboard.......law enforcement hasn't bothered me yet. ![[Linked Image from i100.photobucket.com]](http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m11/48fleetline/P7250006.jpg)

Everything that I quoted above is stickly for California cars. I have year of manufacture plates on both of my cars. On my 31 coupe the plate is for 31 and there is no sticker required.

Ontario has a YOM plate program too. I found a set of 28 plates, already checked the number and I just need 10 minutes to pack them up to send them to the MTO for validation.
It's not how fast you can go, but how good you look at 20 MPH.

I wont say your DMV is like the equivilent here but I dont trust them not to lose the plates especially if 1 of the officers decides they would like them. Tony

Geeeeze. Does the Wood piled high in that Garage ever get in the way of that great looking 48 Aero ? Just seems so close..... Sal's right on YOM California plates. Also DMV has a web site and you can do some preliminary checking of old plates on that site. Last year I put California YOM on my 41 and it was rather painless. Went to DMV, filled out paper work, they took my plates and sent them to Sac. About 3 weeks later I got my YOM plates back, my new registration, and 2 metal brackets that mount to the plate for Yr. & Mo. stickers. Along with a bill from Arnold.... enjoy the ride, Michael41

It was my turn last week Ken.... It happened because I was LAZY and did not want to get out of my car to move the trash cans. So, I backed in to my garage and the REAR fenders cleared it just fine, see I told you so !! However, the FRONT fenders protrude more than the rear {duh!}. So as I am backing in I hear, "swish." Then the neighbors hear "%%#^(*@*$#@@!" But, 99% of it rubbed & polished out, thank goodness. You know, being lazy cost money. So Ken & I and maybe others are in a special VCCA club..."rub-a-fender" enjoy the ride, and move the trash cans.. Michael41
