Our '56 Impala serial number starts with 16. Does the 1 indicate Flint? This vehicle was purchased new July 12, 1965 in Whittier, California. I'm trying to get as much information on the car as posible. It is an unrestored 60,000 mile vehicle.
Thanks for your help.

I assume that you meant 1965.....In 1965 the assembly plant was identified by the sixth symbol of the serial number. C= Southgate, Ca L = LA. Z= Fremot, Ca.......examples. The first symbol, a 1 indiactes its a Chevrolet, The second and third symbol, indiactes the body style.

Yes Gene I meant 65. Sorry about that. Now I'm confused. The L on mine is the 7th. I'll give you the complete number. 164375L188323.
Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Looking forward to seeing you in May and September.

Speaking of Assembly Plants there were two more closings this week. Janesville, WI and Moraine (Dayton) OH.
Something I never understood is the number of GM employees that drive non GM vehicles. When I drive past the Ford plant in KY I see many no Fords in their parking lot. What gives?

What was that old bumper sticker?
"Hungry? Out of work? I guess you can eat your foreign car!"
That was a joke back then. Dig in boys!!! We did it to ourselves.
Merry Chistmas everybody...........Joe

A couple of thoughts come to mind about two recent posts by Ken and Joe.
One is "talk about biting the hand that feeds ya." The folks who WORK there don't even buy 'em. HA, some real irony in that.
The other thought is who would know better than the employee, the guy who built it, etc as to whether itsa good idea to buy it or not. HA, another bucket of irony in that one also!!!
Suffice to say, the whole US auto deal is a real big mess.....

I think there might be something else to look at. I had a friend that worked for Saginaw & he heard people complaining all the time about what they would loose ever year in benefits. Some would say why buy from a company that cheats them of their benefits. It may say nothing of the quality. I've always had Chevrolets & I'm not changing now or later. I'll keep redoing them until I can't no more......Joe

As a person that worked for a supplier to the auto companies, I predicted in the '70s that they would fail because of the prevalent internal attitude. They dominated the market and felt that no one could tell them how to do their business. Guess that is still true. And they can't tell us how they will do business differently either. Unfortunately it hurts a bunch of really nice people.
The truth is that both Auto Company and Union management together created this mess and are going to point fingers at someone else until there is not hope left.
The other sad situation is this is not the only business that it happened to. Apparel, Steel, TVs, Machine tools and many others have also left the USA in the past several decades. Stay tuned more to come. Hope the US wakes up before all is lost. With the incoming administration I doubt it will happen on their shift. Their solution is print money!

I,too, agree with Chipper. I've been saying for many years, the same thing, and I didn't work for any auto related business. Lee Iococca said it best, "GM made arrogance into a science" and the UAW made it even better. "That's good enough" is/was the corporate motto. And my current rule #1 is "everything in this country goes way too far" applies to the UAW.

With the incoming administration I doubt it will happen on their shift. Their solution is print money! And.....with the present adminstration their solution is to spend more money and to go deeper in debt, so the tax payer is actually screwed on both ends!
