Has anyone come up with a good gasket to stop the transmission oil from leaking out of the speedometer cable? Thanks

You can make either a felt or rubber seal and that should stop the 600W oil from leaking out of the speedometer cable.

wink :)

A felt seal works well. Make one from a disc of felt with a hole in the center for the cable end.

i see mine is leaking too. when i put the trans back in after my clutch job. i wrapped the trans nipple with telfon tape. it looks like i`m going to have to make a felt seal too.
thanks for the tip.

So far so good with the felt seal. Seems to have stopped the oil from getting though. But time will tell. Thanks for the input.

If the transmission fluid level is correct (able to touch oil with finger below the opening)no oil will come out.

i made my gasket over the weekend and it didn`t stop the leak. but slowed it down alot. maybe the felt will swell up over time or i used the wrong kind of felt.

You may need to put another piece in there. If the felt is loose then it will not be as effective as if it is packed tighter.

My speedometer cable still leaks at the U-joint after putting a rolled up piece of jute (twisted up like a small piece of rope) in the cable connector. It stopped the leak for only about 2 hours. Would roofing felt work? If not, where would I find the felt you are talking about? Thanks.

In an email, JYD suggested:
"You can try to use a small piece of graphite rope packing as a seal like what is used on plumbing applications, or you can use a piece of thick felt that absorbs oil."
I used the graphite rope packing, and it worked great. I then found another leak a couple inches up from that on the cable, and I sealed it by using a "period correct" small hose clamp with a section of fuel line hose clamped inside it. No more leaks!
Thanks for the help Dog!
