I am replacing the glass in my door windows and am having a problem installing the new glass in the carrier channel. I have new channel rubber from Steele and cannot seem to find the trick to install the rubber and glass in the channel. I am using soapy water so that everything should slide together. Would appreciate any advice on the method to do this.

The channel rubber (channel tape) comes in different thicknesses. They may have given you the thicker version. Try a local auto glass store for the thin version.

Thanks for the response Gene. I am familiar with the different channel tape sizes and had the same thought about thickness. However, this is a special rubber gasket for the '37 - '40 chevy's that has a double seal lip and it matches the shape of the old seal that I removed. You can see a pic of it at www.steelerubber.com, item # 70-0241-57. I am going to contact Steele to see if they have any recommendations or if they have different thicknesses. Any other ideas?

My guess is that they either made the rubber thicker or harder...which is common with the replacement stuff.

The new rubber appears to be a little thicker that the old. I was able to widen the glass channel slightly and everything fit just fine.

I read this before, but did not really understand what I was looking at when I went to the website.

I had looked at the side windows on my car and noted that there was no weather strip on the lower edge of the glass/door area. I do know that there are holes to let the water out of the door at the bottom, but it did not seem like a good way to take care of any storm water hitting the glass. Now I see that this carrier channel rubber goes up to the bottom of the window opening to create a seal when the window is closed. This probably still leaks, but will stop some water.

I went back to look at all four doors and found that three have the rubber missing and one door still has it, but it is hard as a rock. If I have this right, it looks like another project for me.

Rich, no one said that life was easy. You have it figured correctly, all the windows use this rubber strip.

Is this a friction fit or is the glass/rubber/carrier channel all glued together?

Also, an off topic question. I have the 7 tube radio for my car. What is the red switch on the side of the case for, and, inside on the chassis there is a bayonet plug the size of a tail light bulb. What should be in the socket and what is it for? By the way, I do have the radio working.

I do not know what the vendors have done on this part. You would hope it is all one piece.

The two position switch with the handle on the outside of the case is the Automatic Volume Expander. The socket inside is to be equipped with a single contact bulb. At full volume you will see the bulb flashing in tune with the music.

Thanks for the info on the radio. I did notice the "volume expander" language on the paper label inside of the case, I just don't know what it means.

As to the rubber. The picture shows it as one piece. I was just wondering if the rubber had to be glued to the metal channel then the glass glued to the rubber. And if so, what type of glue should be used.
