There has been an add running in the G&D Parts For Sale for some time regarding 3.50:1 highway gears for 1930-32 Chevrolets.

Is this a viable option mechanically & cost wise (I am not wanting to swap out the rear axle)?

(PM me or email if need be)

Yes, yes, and YES. I have purchased TWO sets for my cars. I wouldn't drive my car without them. They make city driving so much more enjoyable... (if that's possible!!??)

You do have to mount the ring gear to your old one, and it'll require either a professional press or special bolts... I've heard of both... luckily I was able to find a shop with a big enough press...

The 3.50 gears are the only way to go! Get a set while the gettin' is good because Larry Jackson may not make another run.

wink :)

31 Confederation--JYD & Bill are correct, I installed them myself a few years ago with no regret. You can comfortaly cruise all day long at 55 mph at lower rpms. Larry Jackson has been a long time member of the VCCA and contributed an article about his 3:50 gears in the Feb, 1992 issue of the G&D pgs(13-16). If you want to read this article and don`t have that issue, e-mail me and I`ll send it to you. If you really think you want his gears you ought to give him a call as I think he is getting real close to doing them right now. Larry is very nice and patience and also very helpful in answering any questions you might have.

It all depends where you will drive your car. If on relatively flat roads then the 3.50 gears will be a good improvement. However if you drive your Chevrolet in the mountains or hilly country you might not be as enthralled with the amount of time in second gear.

I have bought (not paid yet) a set for my 31 Pick Up, Petrine, It will be installed later this year after I get it from Larry. The traffic in the Oslo area is already so heavy that in order to make my rides more pleasant, I want to change after some years in doubt. (I like the original parts).

Hopefully we still will enjoy the smaller roads at smaller speeds after changing.

I have a deposit on a set of gears for my '32.
Solan it sounds like you have the same problem with traffic as we do in Dallas. Although these gears are not going to let me keep up with modern traffic (75 mph plus) It should keep the rpms down at a comfortable 50 mph.

Could I ask that you email me a copy of this article also. I certainly would appreciate it. I don't have that particular issue of G&D. (gachap@gmail.com)

Please add me to your e-mail list to send that 1992 article to, on the 3.50:1 gears. I live in a part of Ohio that goes from flat to hilly, and I'm not so sure..........

Thanks

Hoppy, Can I get on the band wagon and get a copy of the artical from you. Please Email: orlando1760@earthlink.net I also have my name on Larry's list for a set of gears. Larry is really a nice guy and lives about nine miles from me. He came over when I was rebuilding my stock rear end and showed me the way. What a help that was. Great guy. Thanks

Thanks again Hoppy, I printed the four pages and read them. Looks great, but I do have one question. The adapter that goes on the speedometer cable. Is that something that is available now? Or do you have to guess your speed? Thanks

I think that you can get the adaptor from Larry Jackson when you order the gears.

Sal--that adapter is extra and he had them available 3 yrs ago. I think they were about $40 and attach directly to the trans and the speedo cable hooks to it.

I just want to clarify the price of the speed-o-meter adaptor. For about 10 years they sold for $75.00. Recently, getting a current price, they had gone way up in price and I've regretfulley had to go up to $96.00 to offset the new price I have to pay. A couple years ago, when I did the 35 1/2 to 36 and 37, 38 and 39 truck 3.36:1's, I went to the local speed-o-meter shop where I know the guy pretty well and he charged me $121.00 for one. I think these type adaptors are loosing favor with vehicle manufacturers who now use predominately electronic speed-o-meter devices. This is possibly adding to the increased cost as production quantities go down.
