This is the latest information on John Hudson's progress in the GREAT RACE. I have permiision form John's wife Conne to pass this along. John and his navigator , young grand son Scott, left their home in New York on Tue. June 26th. They had their technical inspection in Concord, N.C. on the 29th. The race began on Sat. the 30th. On the first day he had perfect (time) scoring on two legs of the race. It was a short day and with only four legs and they finshed overall in 20th place out of the 68 entered. Their timing was 0:15.30 of the mark. July 1st they finished 26th being 0:59.50 off. July 2nd, finished 29th and 0:45.05 off. July 3rd, finished 22 being 0:22.10 off. They run distances that are timed and have no odometer to use. Most of the navigators are "experts" and have been in many of the past races. Scoot is in is mid teens, 15 if I remember correctly, and this is only his second race. John reports that the Hospitality in the state of Tenn. has been wonderful , meeting many VCCA members along the way.
Conne says that they are running in the top 1/3 of their class and "thats pretty darn good" as far as she is concerned.
We wish John and Scott all the luck in the world. There could not be a better person representing the VCCA in this prestigious event.
Will post more as the info. comes in to me.

The race started off in Concord, North Carolina, and will run thru Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Nevada, and end in Anaheim, California. The goal is to match the times that have been alotted for each leg. John said that the normal crusing speed is around 55 MPH and is not a speed contest. His 1940 Chevrolet coupe is completely stock including the 4.11 rear end. He runs 5W-30 oil and has for the last 70,000 miles. He also drives the car to and on the Eastern 6 Cylinder tours.....talk about seeing the USA in Your Chevrolet, it would be difficult to top John's travels.

We have two V.C.C.A. members competing in the Great American Race. John Hudson from New York in his 1940 Coupe and Bill Cook from Arizona in his 1952 two door sedan. This 1952 competed in the 1989 Carrera Pan American Race. Bill will be happy to show you the poster at any of the Great American Race Pit stops.

....They run distances that are timed and have no odometer to use.... I meant to ask about this several days ago. Does this mean the participants can't use the odometer (??) or that Hudson's 40 doesn't have an odometer (??) It seems like "no odometer" would make this very difficult in a "timed race." Bill.

Odometer contestants have tape over the odometer so they cannot see it. Most have an auxillary speedometer. They look the same in every car, so they must get them from the same source. The max speed on this speedo is 50. When I followed these guys over a two day peiord thay all seem to drive at 45. Bill told me that he keeps his eyes glued to the sppedo the maintain a certain speed from stop to stop and realy does not see any of the countryside.
Now driving a 1940 Chevrolet at 45 mph for 1400 miles probably is not that bad. Imagine driving a 1964 Corvette at that speed for 1400 miles, that would be torture.

What great pic's. Now that's enjoying your Chevrolet!!! All three are very impressive but I agree with 42bill. That last one is the best. This will be a trip the grandpup will never forget. Thanks for the updates. I find this post super interesting.

I haven't heard from Johns's wife for a few days now. In past years she would post the results daily. Will post the latest as soon as I hear from her.
