Need help finding parts for a Tillotson JR5A carb. It is on a 1929 Chevy Firetruck. It belongs to my local Vol. Firedepartment and I am trying to find parts and get it running. I have looked allover and can find nothing.

Parts for that carburetor are hard to get. Since that carburetor is incorrect for a 1929, you should try to get the correct Carter updraft carburetor because parts for that carburetor are readily available.

wink :)

What parts do you need? I have a JR5A Tillotson carb laying around here and just put some penatrating oil on it to see if it will break lose. Not too bad looking. I agree with the Dog that it would be nice to have the original one but if you need some parts just to get it going and you could use this one you may have it for shipping costs.

Some people swear by the performance of the Tillotson JR5A and others swear at them. I have a couple but never tried to run one. The original Carters run well when they are in good condition.

The Tillotson has a die-cast body that is prone to hold parts fast and break if you get too rough with them. If you are lucky they can be taken apart and repaired. Most were made in the 40s and 50s.

Two Carter RJH-08 (also C RJH-08) carburetor models were used in 1929. The earlier version was designated as a 125S. It has a short accelerator pump attached to the side. Later a 136S with a longer thinner pump was used. The two used different internal and external parts in addition to the obvious pump differences. Despite the fact that both (and also the later '30-'31 150S) had the RJH-08 in raised marking the bodies are not interchangeable. It is due primarily because the two pumps used different number of threads per inch.

VCCA members have access to Technical Advisors who volunteer to assist members with the restoration or preservation of their vehicles. There are also several truck guys that can be of help. This Chat Site is an excellant source of information as well. Some of those truck nuts are bolted here.
