Ron unless your dealing with a high-end lab grade scope like a Tektronics that Mack was talking about earlier, most service grade scopes are pretty simple and basic. Over 90% of the time, like all older electronics devices, they are plagued with capacitors that have gone bad. The first thing I do with any older piece of electronic gear is replace the caps. I'm not exaggerating, there are only a handful in there, generally six or eight and a filter cap and this will usually cure most of the problems. Cost is usually not more than $8 of $10. What ever you do don't go inside and start twisting adjustments unless you have a schematic and understand what it says. Once you have it out of alignment it can be a bi%#h to get back in.
Oh, and that condenser, $6.49 at NAPA last Saturday. And it's capacitance if anyone cares is .22uf, I checked three of them, all new.
